While Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings had the potential to be the Black Panther for Asian people, I do wish they hadn't so forcefully tried to turn it INTO Black Panther. The story's different, but giving the character an extended family and an "Asian Wakanda" was just a little too familiar (or perhaps I'm reacting to borrowed Iron Fist riffs). So everyone's been after me to judge the martial arts in the film so let's address it - they did a pretty good job of it. In fact, I rather like the first half more than the second where big CG nonsense takes over. It seemed clear to me that the film was paying tribute to Chinese action cinema by emulating various styles. There's a wuxia sequence that's beautifully balletic. There's the Jackie Chan-type bus fight that's a real pleasure. When we get to Macau, it feels like a Hong Kong crime thriller. Even that fantasy climax is a slicker version of something like Zu Warriors or Young Detective Dee. In other words, it morphs into a superhero epic, and a large part of me certainly resents the change. It's a martial arts movie, it should have ended in a big (human!) throwdown. That said, I'm never not gonna like Akwafina, here playing the action-comedy version of her character in The Farewell. Same goes for Michelle Yeoh and my favorite actor of all time Tony Leung - they do a lot with what little they're given, Leung more or less stealing every scene he's in and far more sympathetic than you'd expect from a Fu Manchu/Mandarin derivative. The MCU loves to cut the tension with comedy, and it's a mixed bag on that front. Simu Liu and Akwafina have good character moments, but Ben Kingsley, though he does have some amusing lines, tends to grind an already exposition-heavy movie to a halt with his shenanigans. Mid-credits sequence connects the movie to THE NEXT BIG THREAT(TM), with a meta-welcome to the MCU for the characters. None of these can stand alone, obviously. So not a favorite in the line, but then I've been spoiled by watching way to much Hong Kong cinema.

As an person of Asian descent, never have I felt so 'seen' by a Hollywood movie as this one. Loved every minute of it.

Unfortunately this one joins the bland and boring pile of marvel movies for me. (Other movies on that pile are Black Widow, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Thor 1 and 2,...) The movie was kinda fun during the first act. We get some nice character building for Shang-Chi and his friend and we get a fun action scene on a bus. But the movie becomes very boring once Chang-Chi get's captured by his father. None of the action scene reach the level of the bus one, our main characters become very bland and the plot becomes really predictable. The final act is almost as bad as the one in Black Widow. For some reason they expect us to care about some magical village and all of its boring inhabitants but it just doesn't work. The movie isn't really fun beyond the first act but it also never becomes exciting or suspenseful. Which makes all the scenes and action just really dull. With this and Black Widow, Marvel Phase 4 is of to a rocky start. And that's a shame because I've really enjoyed the MCU over the years.

Shang-Chi finishes the scaffold fight and suddenly he has zero agency for the rest of the film. Before that he has motivation and makes decisions that affect the story, but as soon as his dad turns up in Macau he's just moved around by other people telling him where to go and what to do until the end of the film. Everything beyond Macau was a joyless slog.

Story is balanced - contains multiple dark topics and dark events but it has strong comedy vibes too. And finally, a movie where trailer didn't betray all the story, it has even some magic in it. Recommended to all fans of kung fu and to all fans of Harry Potter.

It doesn't quite stand on its own two legs because in a rather obvious way it's trying to fill a gap in the same way that Black Panther did. I was honestly expecting a lot more of Asian culture being touched on if I'm honest. A lot of the hallmarks of ancestry, hard work, and parental control are there but not in a super strong way that I thought the movie would certainly draw from. We got a lot more typical Marvel action than was probably called for. Loved the homages to Kung-Fu movies and fight choreography but then the big 'ol CGI stuff rolls in and that was the end of that.

We have seen it before kind of, many spices in the story, but it's a very good production.

A miss in the MCU.

Hollywood trying to be too woke about being Chinese.

Always hate it when they make a villain not really a villain as to not offend anyone. Shang Chi's father is supposed to be a pure villain, the mother storyline took away a lot from the real storyline.

Awkwafina's character becoming a boss archer after one day of training was equally ridiculous.

Hopefully if a sequel is made it will be darker, though I'll admit the Mandarin was a funny touch.

Absolutely loved it. IMO, it’s the best MCU movie and that’s saying a LOT, coming from me. It’s original, has a great story, good screenplay, excellent fight scenes WITH the actors (not stuntmen), the villain has a unique agenda (not just to kill the hero or take over the world), the origin story is told perfectly, the superpower (the rings) is really interesting, and the music is fantastic. It finally bumped Iron Man down to #2 on my MCU list.
