Flops

A shame that they wasted Daniel Craig's tenure as Bond after such a promising start. Casino Royale was so amazing. I really wish they asked Martin Campbell to do another right after it. His other stuff hasn't been too great, but he made the best two Bond movies in the last 30 years.

James Bond is pure escapism and to compare his various outings and incarnations to one another is simply silly. Much like this outing when compared to the other Craig films. Casino Royale grittily rebooted the character after his downward spiral in the Brosnan era and started an interesting character arc that culminated in the spectacular Skyfall. So when Spectre comes in and reverts to the cliches we used to love, people are up in arms. And for good reason. Everyone has an idea of what, or rather who, James Bond is. Men want to be him, women want to be with him. It is a fantasy that you indulge in for a couple of hours and when it's over you either move on with your life or try to become as dashing and debonair as 007.

The first reaction I overheard once the lights came on was that "it was too far-fetched." It's a FUCKING JAMES BOND MOVIE!!! The character exists in a hyper-reality that appears to be similar to our own but is not. How many real life people do you know go on globe-spanning adventures and single-handedly constantly foil major terrorist plots? James Bond is a superhero with a bulletproof liver and unstoppable libido. He can charm the shell off a turtle.

This movie isn't terrible, it's just uneven and ultimately boring. I never really care for what's going on and even found myself rooting for the villain at the end just so he can live forever in this Austin Powers parody universe. Either it was my imagination or did they use a slide whistle in the beginning sequence when the helicopter was vertical?

Incredible one-take opening.

Great movie. Still not surpassing Casino Royale but more interesting than Skyfall and Q of S.

Very very nice cinematography, a very pretty film to look at.

Quite a quiet film, which made it difficult for me to refill my wine glass in the cinema...
