It took guts making this film in the time of the Love Generation. This is powerful stuff. I feel that anyone that has ever felt they might be a Pacifist should watch it. It makes your blood boil and may make you rethink your ideals. I have never been a violent man but could see myself in Hoffman's character and how a man could have to resort to violence in order to protect the ones I care about and my property. It gave me a lot to think about.
An odd and sometimes shocking little film starring Dustin Hoffman. This thriller asks questions about how a man who has refused to commit violence all his life can cope with the violence thrust upon him. Does pacifism actually ATTRACT violence? Is there a point at which one must put one's pants on and commit violence as a deterrent? We're not dealing in absolutes here. I'm giving major props to the editing which ups the tension about 1000%. Slow to start, provocative, and not for the feint of heart.
The violence in this film was not gratuitous moron. Do you even know what the word means? Maybe explicit if you are grasping at straws, but it doesn't come until the end of the film. And even if it was, would people looking at a Caravaggio painting brush it off as gratuitous?
