The wife forgave him pretty quickly for an attempted murder...akuma587
A must see for any silent film fan, or any film fan for that matter.weirdboy
What I want to know is, did they really get a pig drunk?Jook
I'd have told him to fuck off.V012
Classic, simple, thoughtful, powerful and heart-breaking, this film changed the meaning of love or at least clarified itstexdo
This is what happens when you give a big budget and creative freedom to a master like Murnau. At least three or four sequences that are 10 years ahead of their time. Powerful and full of strong, unforgettable images. Throughout the city segment you can fell the darkness coming in mixed with the joyful mood.Louis Mazzini
How the hell can anyone dislike this movie?FreyaMcOmish
Reflecting back on it, I think it's silly how it's depicted like he's fallen under a slatternly woman's spell and she's to blame! Or am I being harsh? Otherwise a beautiful film.afan
probably the best non-comedy silent film that i have seen. 9/1072aicm
So you tried to kill me? Nothing a piece of cake, some flowers and a trip to the church won't fix!jacktrewin
beautiful film with great acting, direction and cinematography. Although the story is simple, it allows us to get to know the couple at the centre and makes us emotionally involved. this film flew by and was a joyTheMajor
What surprises me most is that many people consider this the best silent ever, even though they have only seen a handful of silents (most have only seen the Chaplins/Keatons + Metropolis and Sunrise). The first 50 minutes are incredibly well made, despite the very weak plot. After that it goes downhill very quickly. F.W. Murnau is definitely one of the most gifted silent directors, but this is not his best film. Faust, City Girl and Der letzte Mann are all better. The thing that makes Sunrise very popular could be its accessibility, the simple story and subtle acting make it less alienating to modern audiences than most other silents. This film feels more modern than other silents and because of its plot, it does not rely heavily on intertitles.

This film won a special Academy Award for "unique and artistic production." "Wings" also won in the category, however, for"Outstanding Picture, production." It was the first award ceremony and they honored films for 1927 and 1928. In subsequent ceremonies, only one picture was given the "Best Picture" awardSiskoid
I was definitely not expecting Sunrise (A Song of Two Humans) to be so captivating. While I recognize Murnau's place among the greats of silent cinema, his Nosferatu left me a little cold. Jump ahead 5 years, and he's making a 90+ minute relationship drama, veering off its initial thriller foundation after the first act... It shouldn't have worked so well on me. Especially with that strange upended structure. But wow. No surprise, the film is technically very well done, with powerful effects to show the husband's guilt and ambitions. Sunrise's real strength is in making you care for the characters through emotional context, brought to life by George O'Brien and Janet Gaynor, enough so that 1) you forgive what seems unforgivable when SHE forgives it, and 2) you are desperate for the sun to rise on a happy ending and not a horrific one. On the surface of it, the second act seems to be dilly-dallying and being cute, but it's well-orchestrated to make you go "NOOO NOOOOOOOOO!" as you enter the third act. Movie fans will of course keep fanning the flames of Murnau's expressionistic horror films, but I'll be over here, keeping a candle lit for Sunrise.Scratch47
The first half is gorgeous human drama, and then it gets patchy...Showing items 1 – 15 of 50
