I think the true genius of this film escapes many people because of the sly and ulterior methods the Coens used to present an overtly political message. It is clear from the get-go that Walter Sobchak is the ultimate neocon, a battle-hungry Vet who sees everything through a Nam-colored lens. His radicalism is made clearer when he terms the impending Gulf War (at the time the movie takes place) "a fucking cakewalk." If you take the plot and characters of the film as part of an allegory regarding US policies towards Vietnam and the Middle East (Goodman as the impulsive US government, Bridges and Buscemi as the hapless citizens who receive the brunt of the collateral damage), I think the intentions are clearer. I don't know how some of the other players fit into this theory, particularly the Nihilists and Jackie Treehorn, but I think it's a pretty apt conclusion.

@frankqb I completely agree with you. I can't understand all the big buzz around this.

I also think the same thing about No Country For Old Men. As we say here in Brasil, it's a movie "without feet neither head" meaning "senseless"

Perhaps something in my upbringing makes this movie nothing more than an annoying blip on my film-radar, incessantly beeping to be recognized while nonetheless providing nothing of value but the knowledge of its own fleeting existence. Bridges and Goodman are amusing, but the glorification of this stoner's life (and let's face it, the Dude is set up to be nonetheless the hero of this story despite his flagrant crapulence) makes the film an ode to a style of life that escapes my understanding. The Cohens do not make bad films, they just sometimes make films without value. Art for art's sake, yes, but The Dude for The Dude's sake is a bit much for me to accept. Take a pass on this overrated piece of stoner-friendly cinema.

Jacking off while driving the car and getting flipped by cigarettes between your legs and crashing into a garbage dumpster, only the work of a slob. XD

A very quirky flick with some memorable performances. It is not the greatest, but it is enjoyable.

well, i am disappointed. When i saw this movie checked by everyone i said to myself that "this movie must be great!" but it wasn't. Yet, it is watchable. no pros nor cons about this movie. you watch it and it is over.
