A decent World War II flick, but with little new to offer for anyone familiar with the genre. The plot consists of random episodes that seem to symbolise rather obvious themes of war. The characters have their moments but stay through to type (or should I say clicheé) and are therefore somewhat shallow. They did not interest me much despite good efforts from the cast, especially Lee Marvin.Sobchak

Largely a disappointment, The Big Red One doesn’t live up to its reputation. There’s nothing particularly bad about it but as someone else pointed out, it lacks a spark. It feels like a collection of personal reminiscences of the war - many of them interesting but none really gelling together as a cohesive whole, with most of the individual segments themselves feeling rushed to get to the next one. There’s probably enough material here for a Band of Brothers style series, which I could see working much better.Paravail

awful. if you want to see a good war film, then watch: the Ningen no jôken trillogy, the ascent, come and see, the thin red line or full metal jacket.
