   It's not that they liked to make Chinese movies with Americans pretending they were Chinese, that's just how it was back then. It's yellowface, similar to blackface. 11 years 2 months ago

   This was actually quite good-- an obvious inspiration to Terrence Malick. Impressive outdoor scenery and very expressive camera work and editing. Clearly it's regrettable they didn't cast more Asian actors but it's still emotionally resonant. 2 years 8 months ago

   If you can (somehow) look past the yellow face thing, you'll find some impressive set pieces. I don't think it is as bad as other people are saying. But It falls in line with other adaptations from that era, like I Remember Mama or Cukor's Little Women that feel just like stuff happening to characters without any sense of momentum. 2 years 9 months ago
