Obvious oscar bait. It's a little trite in its storytelling perhaps and it's a fairly well worn message by now. Done with plenty of schmaltz. That doesn't mean it isn't worth telling it again to reinforce the message and that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it.

Though the film making is lightweight the performances do a lot of heavy lifting. I expect at least two Oscar nods for Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer.

What could have been a touching movie, is pretty much ruined by a very one-sided antagonist. Giving her alittle more humane motivation, would have given the movie a stronger message.

I hope Jessica Chastain gets the Oscar for this. Definitely great talent.

Had the potential to be much much better. Just lacked the feel which could move people...

When I came on here, I thought everyone was going to disagree with me when I said this movie was nothing special. I'm glad people agree. I was excited to watch it because of all of the hype, but after the last scene, my thoughts were, "really? that's it?". Can we all move on from films where white people try to help black people? Stop convincing yourself, and this is coming from a white woman.

"The Help" is a legitimately inspiring movie about courage, women's rights, race-relations and the power of art to put a mirror up to a society. Viola Davis is her usual remarkable self and truly deserves an Oscar for her performance, but the strength of the entire ensemble cast makes her performance only one among many great ones. Yes, this is the kind of film that will win an Oscar - likely Best Picture - and I think it probably deserves it. The editing is tight and crisp with few meaningless or wasted shots, the score moving and effective, the dialogue powerful at times, others subdued. It is a subtle film where much is left unsaid - perfect for a film about speaking out in a society where much is left unsaid. There is indeed very little to quibble with in this film - though one can see that it does take a somewhat safe, cursory, feel-good approach to civil rights.
