Really liked it! I kind of got the feeling the book had really been stretched out to fill all three films, though I have not read it, there were some scenes I think not all viewers will find interesting. Anyway, great film and a great start for a trilogy, can't wait for the next one!

I paid for the cinema and watched the three films and was disappointed. Many years later now I'm watching the fan edit. It's so much better, it actually makes sense and flows as it should. It's shorter... split into two films by an intermission...and the cut out material, I haven't missed at all. Beautiful job, done with a lot of love.

A few cliches notwithstanding, this is my favorite of the Peter Jackson / Tolkien film adaptions. I don't understand why the critics thought this was uneventful. IMHO, it was the most eventful of the 4 Jackson/Tolkien adaptions I've seen so far. Glad I ignored the mixed reviews & watched it. Enjoyable. I'll be viewing the next 2 Hobbit films in the future.

This first part of the trilogy is more enjoyable personally.

It is an amazing introduction of Bilbo's first adventure, and at the same time is the introduction of the LOTR books and movies.

Maybe Peter Jackson's desicion of making 3 parts is not the best idea, and including a female elf, partner of Killy killed me.

Overall i can say this movie involve dwarfs, hobbits, elves and Gandalf with a perfect synergy.

Misty Mountains adaptatios is flawless.

After watching the movie several more times and reading the book yet again I feel as if I can finally review this one. The Hobbit as a book always had a sort of light yet almost childlike touch to it. It has a different tone compared to the LOTR trilogy in a kind of whimsical fashion. That attitude is somewhat present here but Jackson treats the source material in the same *Epic* mentality that he tried before. By the time of Battle of the Five Armies this attitude has swallowed the film completely and it no longer bears any resemblance to the book.

This is a different Middle-Earth, one where Sauron hasn't gotten a hold of yet. Jackson targets certain parts of the book and executes them rather well (Riddles in the dark is my definite favorite.) Yet already we start to see the addition of material to try and stretch a single book into a trilogy of movies. Overall it's not too bad, "Desolation" would prove to be more enjoyable for me personally.

I haven't read The Hobbit in 30 years and I've never been a Tolkien fan (indeed, the story is a series of unconnected events that end in deus ex machinae), but I AM a fan of Peter Jackson's take on the Middle-Earth. Jackson does seem to fix some of the plotting issues by making it a true prequel to Lord of the Rings, as the various dangers Bilbo and the company of dwarves face becomes a preface to the coming war. Why are trolls so far south, or orcs so far north, etc.? The prequel elements might have been the easiest to cut from the film, but for fans, it's a chance to see characters from the first films, and to connect The Hobbit's events more readily to the epic war against Sauron to come. There are some amazing flights of fancy in the film, including a number right out of a musical, but the film gives us permission to believe this is Bilbo's embellished telling of it. And for this Whovian, it makes me smile that by casting Sylvester McCoy as Radagast the Brown, this former (and often underrated) Doctor has been put on the same level as Ian McKellen and Christopher Lee. Structurally, like a lot of Tolkien's work, it probably doesn't hold up, but I was too glad to be back to this wondrous world. It just felt comfortable, like another episode of a favorite series. Martin Freeman was the perfect casting for the reluctant Bilbo, the dwarves are well differentiated, and in the end, the movie has a lot of heart.

At the beginning I was a little suspicious, singing dwarves?
After the first hour, and after I got some rest I started enjoying the movie more, and in the end I end up loving this movie.
I´m a fan of the lords of the rings, a fan not a fanatic, I rather watch Martin Freeman than watching Frodo, Gandalf and Gollum are always welcome, and this movie actually make want to see the sequel.

Silly me...I kept thinking, "Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. would have loved to swashbuckle with these guys. And darn it, I think he would have been the last one standing." But Fairbanks never saw scenery as lush and lovely as I saw in this movie.

Loved this movie! I already loved the three LOTR parts and this one was very nice as well. Director Peter Jackson really has an eye for actors and a talent for casting them in appropriate roles. I would not have expected Martin Freeman to fit the character of Bilbo but he really, really did. Nice special effects, nice action, lovely cast. I also loved Richard Armitage as Thorin and of course the "old" cast from the LOTR movies, e.g. Ian McKellen.

That was great, it was really an unexpected journey for me!
Not a big fan of LOTR to be honest.

They continued on the LOTR franchise while the story deserved it's own style.. Besides, Martin Freeman didn't really do it for me.

It closely follows the beginning of a book, of course it's long and seemingly inconclusive. The only thing that got to me was the sophisticated-sounding queen's english of the goblins and trolls.

It is a good movie, but clearly lacks something that the original trilogy had... First the plot isn't that great, I know it is important to the story but it disappointed me... Then the atmosphere they pass to the viewers is clearly awful when compared to other 3 films. You don't really care for the characters as you did in the other films. At least that was what happened to me.

Still I enjoyed seeing it, since I'm a great fan of this saga. Let's wait for the next two...
