I had been going around, glibly saying I didn't need to see The Hunger Games because I'd seen it already, when it was called Battle Royale. But though the premise is somewhat similar, the intent of both book and film is so different that it was an unfair comment on my part. The Hunger Games isn't about kill gags, for one thing, and instead of following a group of kids and letting us wonder who will make it out alive, we're squarely with Katniss Everdeen (terrible name) practically all the way through. Even when we move away from what she can see, it's only ever to see people talking about her. If Battle Royale was definitely about extreme Reality TV converging with the cruelties of growing up, THG merely uses that trope to support the Bush-era metaphor of sending one's kids overseas to fight in wars. I appreciated it and am looking forward to the next one, but it didn't exactly inflame my imagination. The broad strokes with which the world was painted were perhaps to blame.Earring72
Ok movie but don't get what all the fuzz was about? Movie is overlong, dramatically very uneven and seriously lacking in suspense but good supporting cast and some nice scenes and Jennifer Lawrence make this watchable.cg
I don't really understand the reason people like this movie. 90% of the cast is forgettable, they put a kid in just to touch the audience (though she lasted so little that the dog in "I am legend" was even more touching than her). And I think it missed the opportunity to touch political argoments. It looked to me like a movie for teenagers who think of it as a movie for grown ups...It could have been better if it wasn't so pretentious, which is the reason why I enjoyed Battle Royale a lot more

Pretty good though the slower paced scenes were kinda weak, I didn't feel too much for the characters beyond wanting them to win the games. Definitely a must watch for everyone though.lekast
The Hunger games??? Oh, you mean the bad copy of Battle Royale?Melimeli78
As a true fan of the books, I loved this adaptation. Very well done. All I hoped for.Oneironaut
Takes too long to get going, and the action itself is fairly lackluster. It was decent at times, but the camerawork and editing-to-conceal-the-violence made it disorienting to watch.IreneAdler
After hearing about the story and watching the trailer I did not want to watch that movie. But I finally did, just to know what it was really like. The plot has an interesting concept of course. The actors were mostly okay, but not exactly great; Jennifer Lawrence was really good though and I also liked Amandla Stenberg.
On the whole I liked the movie better than I had expected but I still believe that a much better movie could have been made, you know, based on such a topic. I do not know the book but the idea seems interesting to me.
What bothered me most was that there was often a lack of atmosphere. Some scenes really could have been darker or scarier. I also think that problems were very often solved too quickly and surviving out there just seemed too easy. Some scenes and ideas were nice, though and the movie was entertaining enough to enjoy it.
EDIT: Watched it again, liked it better than the first time.

Decent film but I was a bit disappointed. Having read the book first I thought a lot of valuable information was left out which caused confusing sequences at times.nitewish
This movie lacked only two things; a director, and a screen writer who had read the book.Dennisvaniersel
Overhyped and pretty boring to be fair. The actual world behind the story interested me more throughout the story, than the film itself.Dewsions
I thought some scenes were particularly executed beautifully via the camerawork and the usage of silence helped enhance the emotions we feel towards the characters. Looking forward to the next installment!deepshit_arkansas
It was mediocre and had an amateurish quality to it .themini
This movie takes an hour before anything happens, but fails to develop any meaningful attachment to the characters in the meantime. Worse of all, the game was not even that good! I am disappointed.Hellbent Exodus
The Hunger Games is what you get when you combine two great action movies like The Running Man and First Blood and turn it into a ladies' movie.Showing items 1 – 15 of 107
