Duvall was excellent. Robert Downey was good, though played the cocky smartass type of character we're accustomed to seeing, it wasn't that much of a stretch for him.
Went to see it yesterday - and I have to say it was definately worth walking through wind and rain to get to the cinema and back :)
This is a beautiful movie about a troubled, yet probably pretty ordinary family and especially about a father-son-relationship. There are hilarious moments and also scenes that made me cry, the story is really interesting and engaging... it's just a very human story with all the ups and downs life contains.
I have to put a special emphasis on the acting performances of Robert Duvall - and most of all Robert Downey Jr., he just blew me away. His performance was extremely multifaceted: Successful, cocky lawyer / charming ex-love-interest / loving father / hurt, angry son and husband / caring but estranged brother... he was just perfect for the role and even though I already knew about his considerable talent he still managed to stun me.
Credits to director and script as well. The story was always kept exciting and touching and little details really made it special...
like e.g. Hank Palmer (although claiming that his father was dead to him) having the same flowers in his garden that his parents had... or him sharing the same sweets and dialog with his daughter that he used to share with his father...
A hotshot lawyer returns home after a long hiatus to attend his mother's funeral. He has a troubled marriage, a lot of family issues with his dad (a judge) and is known to run away from troubles and problems. He confronts all these on his return, and also has to help his father out of a legal tangle related to murder. A family drama - legal drama rolled into one, and by the end, our lawyer sorts things out and makes peace with himself and those around.
Good performances by the lead actors. Robert Downey Jr. is typically stylish and sophisticated in his performance, and scores in the emotional scenes. Veteran Robert Duvall shows all his years of experience in his authoritative show as the falling judge and frustrated leader of the family.
Vera Farminga and the other actors playing the brothers add more acting points to the movie.
Why, when I searched 'The Judge' did a whole lot of Beavis and Butthead episodes come up first?
Probably because Mike Judge created Beavis and Butthead, along with other fun things like Office Space (movie), King of the Hill (tv), Idiocracy (movie), and Silicon Valley (tv).
Hehe, it really comes off as if Tony Stark took a part-time job as a lawyer. What will you say, he's great in this type of role and gives it a more emotional edge here. He and Duvall of course are the reasons to see this movie - it's not very imaginative filmmaking, a tad too long, a tad too melodramatic and heavy on the music (Bon Iver, come on!), so it doesn't come as a surprise that critics disliked The Judge. It works well enough, so if you like courtroom drama, drama in general and father-son-drama, come and enjoy the performances.
just when i thought how it must have been hugely inspired by How to Kill a Mockingbird, they mention Atticus Finch in the next scene.
I have to grant it, it does have some of that epicness.

Hank Palmer (Robert Downey Jr.) is a shrewd and successful lawyer with a smooth tongue. A chatterbox that overwhelms you with its arguments and you can't get in a word edgeways. He uses arguments and counter-arguments in such a natural way, as if he's ordering something to eat at a sandwich bar. Therefore for some he's an insufferable person who does not mince his words. I love both Robert Duvall and Robert Downey, Jr. but this was one of the most boring movies I have seen. Would have benefited from being at least 20 minutes shorter. They didn't seem to know when to end it.

Engrossing but too long and sometimes a bit too sentimental family drama......but really enjoyed it with two great performances.Limstift
