Starts out pretty badly but builds a strong storyline afterwards. Some lines were hilariously bad and some were dramaticly brilliant. Never seen a film so undivided on its quality. I suppose the reason for that is because of the producers meddling with the film
Orson Welles' vision was marvelous, the themes were classic of a film noir. Rita Hayworth was a diamond. Her acting in the ending was intense.
The hall of mirrors scene and basically the whole ending was directed and written in a very heartfelt and emotionally overwhelming way. The ending of this film made the greatest impact on me.
"Killing you is killing me, but I'm getting kinda sick of us, baby"

There are some good quotes by Orson Welles, but the story is very bad and weak if analyzed, full of holes and obvious consequences..

This was a bit disappointing for me, probably because of all the hype and the talent involved. Yes, the final sequence is excellent, but the plot doesn't kick in until halfway through the film, and Welles' penchant for dubbing his own voice in place of other actors' is really obvious and distracting. It also seemed like a more predictable story than most, even for a noir. Welles took on this project out of last-minute financial desperation, and his heart doesn't really seem in it. All that being said, it's still worth watching, and Hayworth is ravishing, even with shorn, bleached locks.

Safe to say it isn't exactly Orson Welles' magnum opus, and the hatchet job the studio did with it is all too obvious (especially during the opening minutes). The plot is nonsense at times, if rather effective once it gets going. Welles also offers a spectacularly dodgy Irish accent. Nonetheless, it is a thoroughly enjoyable and idiosyncratic effort despite its clearly rough edges. Welles' singular visual style remains, if not as pronounced as some of his others works - all deep focus and deeper shadows. And there's the ending - a tour de force sequence, capturing a confrontation in a fairground that has enough visual energy to fuel an entire film on its own

The Lady of Shanghai is, for the most part, a very ordinary effort for Orson Welles. It has little of the directorial flair of his other films, except for the crazy funhouse climax, which is deservedly iconic. As a story, it is also a thing of parts, barely earning its title, for example, and featuring an unbelievable trial at the start of the third act. But I can still commend the creep factor during the characters' Latin American cruise, injecting a kind of post-war dread into what in another tale would be purely romantic. As Welles' character, irritatingly going in and out of a bogus Irish brogue, gets caught up in the film's intrigue, we are drawn in as well. Whether we believe the mystery's solution or not may be due to the big cuts the studio made Welles' vision, though the shark analogy works quite well regardless. The big question is whether we can we forgive Welles for making Rita Hayworth a blond with short hair ;-).
