The Last Samurai is meant to be a grand historical epic set at the end an era for Japan, when the samurai were being outlawed and Western values were adopted. I say "meant to be" because while it's well shot, acted, researched and designed, it never really rises to the upper level of cinema. It's simply "presentational", and does not dabble in theme or ambiguity in a truly artistic way. The overuse of slow-motion bothered me, certainly. And then there's the ending, which came off as trite and cheeseball - the danger of writing a fictional story set in historical events, I suppose.

The score by Hans Zimmer is also breath taking.

Despite or probably -because- this was such a good movie, it reminded me how much I hate war-movies. I always get so sad and frustrated during the battle scenes. All those wasted lives, wasted for nothing. The more realistic a movie is, the more I'm reminded how screwed up this world is.

This movie could be one of the best ever made, but they decided it should be a blockbuster, a movie for summer, instead of for eternity.. poor judgement

I love this film. In my opinion, the best Cruise performance.

Tom may like to make movies in different settings but I'm afraid he is unbelievable in this. A waste of good scenery. Should've gotten Viggo Mortensen.

Really like this movie, entertaining, well paced, great action, solid story, top notch design and direction and Cruise delivers.....as usual. Have seen it multiple times over the years.

@zbrg1 - You are correct that this movie could be called a rip off of Pocahontas or Dances with Wolves, but the difference is that this movie is somewhat based on a true story.

Avatar is entirely fictional in comparison, not to mention Avatar's script, characters, and story are just plain awful. (I did like the alien characters in Avatar I will say, but all the humans were boring, generic, and unlikeable). It is hard to defend Avatar beyond its technical prowess, as without all of that it would be a truly awful film.

The Last Samurai, was Tom second best film. Which is actually quite an achievment, since he made War of The Worlds.
