What a film this is. Absolutely staggering journey.

The Master is an incredible man to listen to, he is one of the most captivating characters I can ever remember watching. There were times where I felt the film was heading nowhere but once the last scene played out, I knew I was going to have to see this one a few more times.

Sad, unorthadox and mesmerising. Pheonix is a true triumph.

I found The Master to be a fantastic character driven film that aptly examined the need (or lack thereof, if that's your reading of it) for social connectivity and ultimately purpose within a greater community than oneself.

The scene that summed this up, and was the most memorable scene for me at least, was when spoiler

While I agree with how it ended, I wasn't particularly keen on the final scenes, but that's the director's prerogative and I'm sure a million PTA fanboys will tell me I'm wrong.

Great inclusion of some songs by Ella and her contemporaries, overall great film. I highly recommend to see it in a theatre!

I was left a bit confused, but after having some time to think it over, it's quite a great story. It's a simple character study between two men and their journey to cure themselves through each other. The visuals were just as stunning as the performances. If it's one thing PTA knows how to do, it's casting his roles. Joaquin chose one hell of a comeback. I'd be surprised if he didn't land himself an oscar for his role. Very well done.

Most mention Phoenix, but Hoffman is just as amazing.

Very promising premise, but like others say it’s boring. And not in a nothing happens way, but what happens is boring.

Had a lot of potential, but it failed to deliver. At least I enjoyed their performances.

This movie has many favorites but i'm not one of them. Although well acted.....NOTHING happens and the movie just drags and drags and drags. Very boring movie.

The plot was tepid at best and the main character was unpleasant, violent and self-absorbed (not to mention a borderline sexual predator). The film made no effort to explain the (to me incomprehensible) appeal of the Master and the Cause, nor did it explain the fascination shown by the cult-members towards such a self-aggrandizing know-nothing know-it-all who respects no law or opinion but his own. I found his behaviour exhausting and intolerable after just 5 minutes of screen-time. There are films that depict a haunting deconstruction of cult mentality. This is not one of them. What's left is a rudderless character piece, and what good is that when one cannot connect or sympathise with any of the characters that appear on screen for longer than a single scene?

Beautifully acted and stunning to look at, but the plot is completely static and it think it's better than it is.

@thestuman101694: Huh? Was there ever any doubt that film was dead in the first place?

Film is alive and well in the hands of Paul Thomas Anderson.

Excellent performances all round but I think that Hoffman truly deserves an oscar.

great acting, cinematography and direction, however there was no narrative or structure, it left me thinking "what was the point?" when I left the theater

Phoenix and Hoffman should have had their own, separate films. Together they went absolutely nowhere. Neither character changed or learned anything about one another. Waste of talent in front of and behind the camera.

I was hoping shit would get crazy, like, super crazy weird uncomfortable.

Just a little hypnotism.

Awesome performances just needed something extra.

PTA was definitely "making it up as he went along".
