A wolf lurks at night, but no panic, Grandmother is here. Good as Gish, she hunts the Bad.Read more in French on La Saveur des goƻts amers.

OMG! really folks? you don't see a movie for the genre.. you just see the movie and that's it. If you like it or not depends on your point of view and that's respectable. You don't expect nothing and you will be less frustrated. Enjoy the magic of cinema. I kind a like it, somehow it resemblance me a "it's a wonderful world." Yes the acting wasn't any good but for the story I found it fine. The one remarkable thing its the direction and the photography is quite beautiful!egress63
This is one of those movies which makes you dump an entire genre all together. Honestly, if this is the representative film-noir, then the entire genre is worth discarding into the junk pile of history. By the end of the movie, I felt cheated out of 90 minutes of my life.Oh, I get it how the lighting was spectacular and how the children's boat ride was brilliantly filmed and how one of the scenes reminds one of a church, but then lighting and scenery does not make up for the laughable scriptwriting. Two thumbs down.

One of the greatest comedies of all time! :DBrantastic16
What's everyone complaining about? I personally would consider it one of the greatest films ever made - Top 5, even.contrafugal
Well, that was ninety minutes I'll never get back. I'll admit it...I was rooting for the priest by the end.IndianaJones

Stunning cinematography and synopsis, just plain bad acting.Adamov10
great film 8/10whambeat
Chillingly brilliant. The direction is unbelievably good and it was written very well and suspensefully. You can't watch this movie expecting it to be a fast-paced, action packed chase. It's full of symbolism and spine-tingled, perfectly timed entries by Mitchum. 10/10"Leaning, leaning..."

Completely overrrated IMO. However, I can still appreciate it for it's influence, amazing cinematography and Robert Mitchum's performance but to me it is one of those 'classic films' that are to much trapped in the timeperiod that it was made and has just not aged well.So in my mind not a classic, but an important film nonetheless in terms of influence.

Good movie, but the cheesy commentary by Gish at the end and the beginning kinda ruined it for me.TalkingElvish
Amazing how many people came to this film expecting it to be 'realistic' or representative of a genre. From the cheesy performances throughout, to the unrealistic yet beautiful art direction and cinematography this is a fable or dream writ large, and the logic operates as such. This film was intended to explore the plight of the innocent in the depression and examine the lengths people would go to for money. The actors are playing caricatures and they operate to forward the story. Perhaps the real stories of the depression seemed too heavy and polarising to explore with the levity and artfulness that Laughton wanted. This is a masterful work that achieves far more than it ever intended to.Marazmatique
Why do some people seem to think that any kind of symbolism or message in a movie automatically makes it good? Every craptacular marvel movie tells a story of good vs. evil. So what? All I saw beyond the symbolism here is frustrating characters, bad acting and a stupid script. ...Oh, and Lillian Gish talking, that was pretty cool.Showing items 1 – 15 of 45
