I don't think it was a bad film. We definitely could have done without it, though.

Buh. Every choice they made to differentiate from the original was the wrong choice. Not that the original is nuanced by any means, but it seems like a subversive masterpiece next to this.

I don't know why anyone is praising Farrow for this. At least in the original, Mrs. Baylock is menacing. I realize her casting is supposed to bring memories of the other big antichrist film, the brilliant Rosemary's Baby, but this doesn't do anything for me. This remake is inferior in every way to the original.

Mistakes they made:

-The script is nearly word for word with no real new ideas. What's the point unless you add something new? For example, when John Carpenter remade The Thing From Another World he knew to put his own authorial stamp on the film and The Thing is now considered a classic that surpassed the original.
-Damien is given lines. Seriously, why? The filmmakers of the original knew having Damien talk would ruin his mystery and menace.
-They replaced the iconic score with something boring.
-By comparison, Schreiber is a big step down from Peck. In fact, all the acting is worse all across the board from every single character.

Also, the original just feels like a fuller, bigger film while also being simultaneously darker. There were a lot more scenes with Peck bonding with his wife and family while walking through the park and while picking out the house. They were a happy family doing normal things before Damien comes along while in this film they already seem melancholic and tortured before the events start going bad. Stylistically, the film is drab and colorless and all the tension is gone. A lot of the original's filmed on location shots are missing because they filmed nearly the entire thing on the cheap in Czech Republic. This whole venture was pointless and even worse, dull.

Not terrible, but if I want to just watch The Omen, I'll stick with The Omen.

Mia Farrow was the only good thing that came out of this film.
