I watched it multiple times and read the book.
- This is one of the best book adaptations I've ever watched if not the best (haven't read LoTR).
- It is like a magic trick that the movie, in a broad strokes, draws the contours from the start. You have to watch it multiple times to enjoy it fully. Because, the build up enhances the thrill, and it is, imho, nearly impossible to spot all the details in one sitting.
- Even if you spot everything, I advise you to read the book and rewatch it to get additional details and appreciate how the movie dealt with adaptation.
I liked the movie and Bale was indeed amazing. But the body cloning device is just a fairytale. No science-fiction or logic is involved here. I was very disappointed at this.
Movie is ok but it throws too many hints throughout the story to guess what's the big twist coming, making it too predictable to be a mistery movie. Maybe if it was a bit shorter and had less clues jammed down your throat it could be much better
the part about Tesla being the key word is such a deliverately jammed in bait and switch that it just reflects poorly on the writer of the movie. Christian bale had no reason to use that word for the key but the writers wanted to missdirect the audience from the blatant hints they put into the movie. Just bad.
A common complaint is that the mystery is unsolvable without watching the entire film. You get to the last final couple minutes and are bombarded with all the answers, without being given enough hints to work it out yourself.
Having watched the movie a second time, I can assure you that the hints are indeed there. There are more than a handful of clues spread across the entire movie. Sure, it might be a little difficult to figure out what is going on by yourself, but I would argue that it is most certainly possible.
Probably the most underrated Nolan movie. Definitely worth watching.
The melodramtic dialogue and maguffins (i.e. the female characters) aside, it's a good film. I like the central conflict, and several moments genuinely surprised me.
I actually really liked the sci-fi element. I didn't see it as a cheap and lazy plot device, but rather a spot of magic realism that nods to that little part of you that wishes for such magic to be possible.
I also think that it was relevant to the context of the setting.
A time in which the possibility of a transporting machine was very unlikely, but also kind of curiously exciting
Dueling Edwardian magicians (Wolverine vs. Batman), Nicola Tesla, based on a Christopher Priest novel... Should be awesome, right? I thought it was only okay. If you're paying attention, Nolan basically tells you from the outset how the film will be structured, which means you shouldn't trust anything you see, which means it's all much more predictable than it pretends to be. I won't claim I guess everything, but I at least knew what NOT to trust, so the closing revelations weren't particularly shocking. I did like the focus on stage craft and magical tradition, but the sci-fi element that probably worked in Priest's book, doesn't in the context of the film. It feels out of place. So while I can see why someone would watch it twice, the second with solutions in hand, I'm not sure a third viewing would be warranted. It's a little too obvious for that.
Had a great time watching this movie. Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale were great opponents and I also loved Michael Caine, Scarlett Johansson, Andy Serkis and others.
The whole story was really entertaining and interesting and I have to say I also really like the ending.
I was not unsatisfied or disappointed with the reveal at the end at all. It was the bit of hocus pocus before the end that took away from my experience watching this film. For that reason, an 8.5/10 instead of a 9.
It's one of Christian Bale's better movies ... he's always a hit or a miss but since Hugh Jackman was in it, I took the plunge. It's good. Not amazing, but good nonetheless. Original, too, and it keeps you guessing.
I haven't read the book it was based on but the movie on its own was fun to watch.
If you look at this movie as a whodunnit, yes, its ending proves disappointing.
However, the themes of obsession and jealousy are at its core. In that light, this ending is brilliant and shows what rivalry can do to people.
Perhaps the reveal could have been a bit more graceful, making it seem less convoluted, but I think that would take away from the shock its has at the end.
I really think very few directors besides Nolan could pull this off.
I really don't know what to say. On one hand, the movie seems great, one of the best I've ever seen... But in the other hand, i think the sci-fi/fantasy in this movie somehow ruins it a bit. That was not magic, but something we know it's impossible, at least nowadays.
Still, if I would have to rate it, i would give it a 3/4.
