I know this movie is from the fifties and set in the twenties. I know that it depicts a society with very traditional gender roles. But I just can't laugh off (as the filmmakers clearly hoped audiences would) John Wayne dragging Maureen O'Hara across the ground and then accepting a stick to beat her with. If that's an overly presentist viewpoint, so be it.
This was a huge disappointment! Both boring and really bad morals. A man has to prove he is a man, by fighting others and oppressing his wife. Otherwise no one will respect him, least of all his wife, who needs a man who is willing to drag her 5 miles, kicking and screaming. It gets 8/10 on IMDb. Am I missing something?
It has some good points, the beautiful cinematography for instance, but I have to say this film really didn’t age well. Get ready for a lot of really cringy misogyny and Irish stereotypes.
Started out OK (at least the scenery and colors were beautiful) and slowly grew more and more stupid and archaic as it continued. The 225th best film ever? Wow.
Morals-wise even more dated than Wayne's western flicks. One can still appreciate the cinematography and the Irish folk feeling though. Plus Barry Fitzgerald is always a hoot.
Great movie with excellent cinematography and good acting. It depicts beautifully the notion people used to have of the way the ideal man should behave in the past especially in the country. Also, there were many funny moments in it too. I enjoyed it.
This may be John Wayne's best non-cowboy movies. It's a romance movie with an extended fist-fight and many funny moments. One you can watch with your significant other.
This film has some of the most beautiful cinematography of all time. It's such an idyllic and lovingly crafted portrait of Ireland in the golden years gone by, I don't understand how you can watch it and really dislike it...

I really appreciate John Ford's depections of scenery such as streets, pathways, rivers and more notably desert landscapes and grasslands.Matt Addis
