My mother always wanted a girl - she had 4 sons instead... me being the oldest. Not deterred by her lack of female offspring, she set out to show us every estrogen-rich movie out there - Shirley Temple movies, Anne of Green Gables, etc... and every musical she could find - including the one that haunts my dreams: The Sound of Music. Damn it to hell.dombrewer
No wonder the Nazis lost the war... they couldn't catch a bunch of singing kids and a nun. Useless.ChrisReynolds
Beautifully shot: every scene has amazing scenery and sets and is perfectly composed. Characters are inconsistent, with everyone playing exaggerated cartoons at the beginning but becoming a lot more nuanced and interesting right about at the point where the baroness arrives. It's from this point onwards that it becomes a much more interesting film, building up to quite a tense ending, though you have to overlook the Nazis who are outmaneuvered by exiting stage right. One thing that remains consistent are the songs, which are saccharine drivel.Dieguito
Incredible cinematography! Well, its in Österreich!!fetzu
Wow! Incredible cinematography. Gotta love the 70mm..Nowhere Man
It's not easy to think of a more overrated film. A cliche love story made piecemeal with some horrendous songs. And then apparently a few brief scenes mentioning the rise of fascism makes the movie 'dark and profound'.Damn it to hell indeed.

Wunderbar, so schön. Very beautiful, entertaining and dark. This is what modern movies fail to do. They give us a dark color grading and believe that their movies are dark. This tells a story about oppression, hate, intolerance and does it in this wunderschönen pictures. It moves us with it's beauty, and the pain it tells about.asiangotrice
A wonderful classic. Julie Andrews is beautiful and perfect as always.Suzanne
I love this movie deeply. Some may say it's maybe a little long, but I always enjoy every minute of it :)boulderman
Watched again after decades. Didn't recall much. Wasn't plussed by the lyrics. Story isn't too deep but great archBigAwesomeBLT
It was lovely.John Milton
Since almost all the comments before mine are very positive and one's expectations might get too high, I'll nuance it a little bit.I've had the dvd for more than 7 years but only watched it now for the first time. It was ok I guess, nice cinematography and some catchy songs (do-re-mi is stuck in my head now) but I wasn't very impressed to be honest.
I agree with Plummer that it is a bit too saccharine and understand why he nicknamed it The Sound of Mucus. I think Singing in the Rain is a far better film...
Great for musical fans I guess, but it is a bit too goody goody for the average movie lover.

Before watching, I never expected it to be this good. Never boring, compelling at times and a good mix of drama, music and storytelling.seithscott
A wonderful, sweet movie that sweeps you up very lightly takes you along the story of The Vonn Trapp family. The last Rogers and Hammerstein play, it still retains the lightheartedness that made all their plays so magical. Like a Disney movie, you're never in any real danger, but no one ever meant for you to be.JG94
First time watching it. Great, photography is just beautiful, and Julie Andrews is magnificent in the role. The child are kinda dull.
