Fun, amusing, and forgettable. With its mix of legendary characters, brilliant marketing, and totally safe/bland storyline, I won't be surprised when Super Mario Bros. cracks a billion at the box office. However, I can't say that I will be a repeat viewer.

Beyond the in-jokes and name recognition, there is very little happening in this film. I kept waiting to have some kind of emotional investment or for the story to rise past name drops and visual references, but that never happened.

Mario and company are here, you'll recognize things from the games, and there are some cute musical motifs paying tribute to the source material. It's fun, lightly amusing, and the kids will love it. But this is, ultimately, a 90-minute toy commercial--which still can't compete with the greatest toy commercial of them all: Crossfire!

Frustratingly average. Beneath the colors and charm of the source, there’s the usual middle of the road, lazy, marketing minded Illumination.

I think it’s a lot to ask from the creators of Minions but their blueprint should’ve been Buster Keaton and other silent comedians. Imagine a grunting DK; better uses of music (because when I think of Super Mario, I certainly, do not think of the Beastie Boys and a-ha); and exploiting the 2D perspective instead of being an afterthought that’s used for about 15 seconds. There’s enough potential for a great sequel but, again, this is Illumination.

It’s been almost a decade since The Lego Movie showed the world that this type of film can be more than just a cash grab; and Paddington raised the bar for family films. Audiences deserve better and critics are not wrong for wanting that.

surprisingly average, not bad, not great, just okay. the visuals are gorgeous, and the movie sure delivers in nostalgia and references, to mario kart and past editions of the mario saga of videogames. But the story lacks any creative plot.

It's not a bad execution of an almost always repeated plot, it just that the plot doesn't come with any emotional baggage. The evil guy just tell you once his motives, he gives the audience some depth in what is gonna happen if he doesn't get what he wants, but he never - ever explain his rationale to his rivals in-world. His hate of mario is just a non-sequitur, and he lacks any backstory.

Yeah, it's a children movie and not every children movie has to be UP! to be great, but this hasn't any emotional baggage involved, even if it has some funny moments. 6/10

Very average and forgettable.

Will still smash the box office regardless of it being so mediocre.

The only real parts you'll enjoy are spotting the easter eggs.

Wouldn't be suprised if Nintendo launch a nintendo movie every year from now.

Great callbacks to the games (pretty much all of them), so the nostalgia runs rampant. Otherwise, though, a pretty average animated story.

At first I was, like, "WOW! At this day and age they've boldly gone and made Mario speak in that Italian accent we all know and love since the N64 days! Awesome!!!"

Then they gave in and made Mario sound like Sonic.

It's fine, but I'd rather play any of the games than watch it again.

Totally nailed the video game homage, but it’s like it was written by the writers of the Trolls movies.

Forgettable, just ok.Low on story but mindless thrills. My son and friend enjoyed it and that's all you want :-)

fun, colorful, and funny. the plot was kinda meh but the whole point was to squash together a bunch of Mario easter eggs together in a coherent manner and mission accomplished.

Overall it was ok, not great, not bad. They tried to hard to fit in a ll the references to multiple games from Mario Bros to Donkey Kong to Mario Kart. Honestly, it should have just picked on of the Game Series to be referenced, the sequels could have referenced Mario Kart and what not. Great now i want a Mario Kart movie.

At times it felt a little too much "spot-the-easter-egg". Jack Black as Bowser steals every scene and the morbid star was somewhat funny. It's a predictable movie with quality animation.

Colorful animation filled with a lot of action, many references to Super Mario videogames.
For children mostly, I don't have any Mario history, so no bonus points too.
In the future I hope to see more top-notch comedy like here in the beginning, when Mario, Luigi and an angry dog meet in a small bathroom.
