I didn't particularly think much of the script but Eddie Redmayne's portrayal of Stephen is fantastic.

Not a bad film, just not what i expected. If you tell me i can watch a Stephen Hawking movie, this is not what i would have imagined.

Too say it bluntly: this movie could have been about any ALS patient. It only really depicts the struggles of life for a person with ALS, not what Hawking makes Hawking.

What i liked about 'A beautiful mind' is how John Nash thought of his game-changing (see what i did there?) theories, and that is exactly what i missed in this movie. The sequence where Hawking looks in the fire and he has that brilliant idea is beautiful, but overall too short. Maybe they should have focused more on how he was before he got sick and then the struggles he faces with his academic work due to ALS.

But whatever anyone thinks of the story, i wasn't really watching Eddie Redmayne, i was just watching Hawking himself. That's how good he was in this movie.

Brilliantly acted, The Theory of Everything also boasts a script that says more in silence at times than it does with dialogue. A livey score makes the film surprisingly and consistently emotional.

The only complaint is that it looks like it's been shot through a Instagram photo filter.

This was great. An insane story I'm surprised haven't been told before. Overwhelmingly inspiring. The movie has a few things going for it. Eddie Redmayne does the portrayal of a lifetime. He really went all in with this one, and is well deserving of at least a Golden Globe. Maybe the Oscar too. You can see that he has studied Steven Hawkings mannerisms to great detail. What he manages to do and the emotion he is able to capture is amazing. Just through simple silence and his eyes he is able to say so much. This is a lot thanks to the script as well. The score fit's the movie greatly, and really ties the movie together very well. The earlier scenes is shot through varying filters, which helps put the movie into the time period it is suppose to portray. Some might not like it, but I felt that it added something.

Redmayne does an excellent job with his performance as Hawking, but best actor of the year? The Oscar-bait factor of playing a disabled genius probably had something to do with his win. Personally I think Jones deserved the Oscar more than he did for her more nuanced performance in a less showy role as Jane Hawking. Good direction and technical qualities but it never makes much of the subject: it dumbs down the science and then shoves it into the background and then a lot of the story feels sanitised. With all the main characters still alive they don't want to show any of them in a less-than-positive light. You're not going to find any mention of the police investigating his shocking abuse at the hands of Elaine. Compared to something like The Diving Bell and the Butterfly this falls far short.

Gorgeous film. A sneak peak of the man behind the physicist I enjoyed it very much. Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones are so charming in this.

Redmayne was terrific, also Felicity Jones was great and the movie was good but expected more. Missed the "greatness"behind Hawking.

The Theory of Everything's trailer was unrepentantly romantic, and while the biopic's vision of Stephen Hawking and his wife (whose autobiography this is based on) isn't quite that rose-colored, the film is definitely unrepentant in its romanticism. It's a love story first, and a story about science second. It avoids being too cheesy thanks to some incredible performances from both stars and some interesting direction from James Marsh (possible drinking game: circles). Obviously, representing Hawking's physical deterioration and then showing emotion through the most minimal of expressions is an incredible feat for Eddie Redmayne, but it's Felicity Jones I found riveting; she generally has more to play. The parts are definitely stronger than the sum.

Based on the extraordinary true life story of physicist Stephen Hawking, how he battles his grave medical handicap with the help of his wife and goes on to achieve glory against all odds. The toll on the wife's life is also shown and her dignified relationship with a church musician is a sub-plot.

The film is Inspiring, feel-good, has memorable moments and features a once in a lifetime performance by Eddie Redmayne in the lead role. The overall effort that he must have put in for this role is incredible and it shows on screen. Truly deserving of all the awards. The petite Felicity Jones is marvelous on screen, along with all the other support actors.

Along the lines of 'A Beautiful Mind'.

The cast did a fantastic job with their performances, and Eddie Redmayne did particularly well in capturing the essence of Hawking. I wonder how sore his back must have been to hold that physicality for so long.

Spoilers below.

I didn't enjoy the score, I thought it overwhelmed many scenes and didn't add anything - the actors did well in conveying emotions with or without lines. Combined with the fairy-like lighting in many scenes, the film felt garish.

2/5, purely for the performances by the cast.

Eddie Redmayne shows the depth of his amazing talent as Stephen. And while the story is both heart-wrenching and entertaining, it seemed only to be a brief summary of the happy and more upbeat parts of Stephen Hawking's life.

Jane : What are you ?
Stephen : I’m a cosmologist
Jane : What’s that ?
Stephen : It’s a kind of religion for intelligent atheists.

I must admit that I've seen this film a few weeks ago. Probably the fact that Eddie Redmayne was nominated for an Oscar, prompted me to see if he was a worthy contender for the coveted golden statuette. And the only thing I can say is that he totally deserved to win with his magnificent performance. I love to watch a biographical movie now and then. The only drawback is that I'm always a little bit disappointed about the subject covered in such a biopic and that the emphasis lies on something I wasn't looking for. In "jOBS" I missed the philosophy this visionary had about the Apple phenomenon and the development of the applied interface (which is currently perfectly normal for everybody). The clash between Jobs and Gates was cited as a fait divers, whereas that interested me. Also in "The Theory of Everything" the focus was on other facets of Hawking's life. What applies to both these films is the fact that the protagonists physically look an awful lot like the corresponding character. It's creepy to see how they both manage not only to capture the emotional part, but also to match the characteristics and physical traits of these famous people. "The Imitation Game" is obviously also a biopic which, however, had a more adventurous twist rather than being a purely biographical sketch.

You must admit that the performance of Eddie Redmayne is simply magnificent. Both excerpts from the college years, where he's still healthy, lively and the way he finishes his studies in a nonchalant manner, as the portrayal of a genius who's struck by a muscle disease, are brilliant and striking. A series of events wonderfully visualized using a variety of intense colors at certain times. The university professor who looks surprised at the solutions scribbled on the back of a timetable (10 math assignments which are almost impossible to solve I suppose, of which Stephen could ONLY solve 9). A family dinner Jane was invited to and where you already can get a sense of the intellectual atmosphere. The contradictions between Jane and Stephen when it's about religion. Hawking who excludes everyone after hearing the terrible verdict and the determination of Jane. These fragments stayed with me and made it a fascinating film.

Which theories the brilliant mind of Hawking produced in that cripple body, isn't explained in detail. Here and there black holes, big bangs and the concept of time is mentioned, but eventually I was wondering what exactly Stephen Hawking's ultimate contribution was to mankind. What Jobs achieved you can discover in any computer shop. And from Turing we know that he has broken the Enigma code. But what abstract evidence Hawking delivered, wasn't clear to me. From one moment to the other he's a celebrity and a much sought-after guest speaker. That a woman who lives together with a paralyzed person can't really enjoy a thrilling, romantic life and that she's actually the person who's responsible for all practical matters in a marriage, is of course obvious. And that's the central theme of this biopic: a loving relationship slowly falling apart because of a fatal disease, the awareness of limitations and the danger to seek solace in someone else's arms. So it's mainly a biopic about the wife of Hawking, instead of about Hawking himself. An insight into the life of mathematical genius, who could explain the mystery of the origin of the universe by using his phenomenal intellectual brain, is thus transformed into an ordinary dime novel about an unhappy woman who feels abandoned by her ever loving husband. And that's something I wasn't waiting for.

Despite the romantic approach, I think it's an admirable film. The situation Hawking is facing during his life, ensured that other qualities came up : humor and willpower. These two qualities are subtly incorporated into this film. Even the choice Hawking made at an older age about his marriage, took me by surprise (actually it wasn't much I knew about the life of Hawking). Once again this proves that he sees himself as a normal functioning man. "The Theory of Everything" is a beautiful film that actually moved me and should serve as an example to show what one can achieve with the right attitude and a big portion of perseverance.
