   Watchable, but not a great Western. The script and story is strictly by the numbers and Fonda and Perkins, although good as usual, can't do much with their respective roles as "wise, tough guy with a past" and "feckless young sheriff out of his depth". There's also a disappointing thread of sentimentalism which sees Fonda wistfully staring at little Kip and his mother at the ends of too many scenes, something thankfully missing from Mann's better Westerns. 3/5 12 years 1 month ago
