Despite the inherent goofiness of several scenes, it's definitely one of the more unique takes on a disintegrating relationship that I've ever seen.
Also, despite the fact that kaleidoscopic patterns and colors have become pretty cliche for trippy visuals, this is still pretty visually stunning at times, especially during the montage sequences. 7 years 2 months ago -

Shagadelic. The montages and psychedelic visuals are cool, but get old quick when the film leans into them too hard for elongated stretches. What I found truly great was the interactions Peter Fonda had with strangers and the mentor figures, played wonderfully by Dern and Hopper. When Fonda talks to the anti-drug waitress, his reactions are so funny and genuine. The scene with the kid is tense and hilarious. Good stuff. Bottom line: I really enjoyed this, but it lacks an actual resolution. It kinda fell apart. That may be the point-- that there's no actual insight-- just a high that'll be gone tomorrow-- but still. Felt lazy. 2 years 1 month ago
