It has a strange, "something-is-off" vibe throughout, and then the ending is sheer brilliance. Also, Britt Ekland's song and dance was the sexiest thing in any horror film.
A pretty cool film generally. A gritty, intriguing thriller with plenty of atmosphere, a great performance from Woodward, a truly masterful directorial touch and a totally unexpected twist.
Wow, what a brilliant film. At first I was puzzled by the whole musical aspect of this horror film, but by the time Britt Eland was doing her infamous nude song and dance, I was converted to a true believer. Not just one of the greatest Horror films ever made but one of the greatest films ever made.
Peculiar and fascinating. To me it bares some similarities to two films from the same year - the unorthodox editing gives it the same gritty British feel of Don't Look Now; whilst the pagan ritual scenes are at times so odd and unexpected they almost wouldn't seem out of place in Jodorowsky's The Holy Mountain, the pinnacle of surrealist film. Good ending too.
Nothing against Nic Cage but this is the much superior original to the 2006 film. You can kind of see the twists and turns coming so it doesn't surprise as much, but taking it into consideration that it was made nearly 50 years ago I think you can forgive the cliches that have stemmed from this folk horror genre.
I feel this film is lucky to be with us - if you feel inclined, read about what it took to get it made!
I will always love it - one of a kind. A musical horror film, a drama, a black comedy - I don't know which it is. You will bring your own outlook to the film. Avoid the remake.
Wow. I've been looking forward to seeing this for years, with so much build-up it easily could have fallen short but it exceeded my expectations.
Honestly, I can't think of another movie quite like it - the film plays with so many genres and even though the ending had me shook it doesn't play like a horror movie, instead it, well, plays.. the film has so much fun, from the amazing costumes to the musical numbers to the earthy evocation of a modern pagan society and the delicious performance by Christopher Lee. I'm gushing incoherently because this is a delight.
