Having recently seen "Project Nim" and as an admirer of the superb "Man on Wire" I've been looking back into James Marsh's resume and caught this bizarre and brilliant gem. I'm surprised at the low IMDB rating given the stunning B&W cinematography and fascinating and gruesome subject matter. Also that the film has a neat ironic twist to show that perhaps the extraordinary events of the 1890s aren't quite so unheard of 100 years later. Can a place be truly evil? You might think so after watching this film. Truly mesmerising.
