Facts can be nullified and invalidated, but they may still contain something true. Even a lie is very telling. It conveys something true about the liar. Just because an event didn't actually happen doesn't mean it isn't true. A novel, a work of fiction, that is rendered skillfully, will affect us as something true. The careful fabrication of characters and events resonates beyond the words and symbols on the page. This is a successful work of art, one in which the world expands beyond the abstraction of the art itself, in which artificial things begin to live and breathe with us, face to face. This is the strange phenomenon of art.

This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) - Talking Heads
Coba beri contoh apa itu yang disebut dengan joie de vivre? Video ini misalnya. Juga seluruh performance dari Talking Heads di film aksi live mereka yang berjudul Stop Making Sense. Film yang disutradarai oleh Jonathan Demme itu disebut-sebut sebagai The Greatest Concert Movie of All Time. And I promise you my friend, it is. Saya tidak bisa berhenti tersenyum lebar sepanjang film itu. Video cuplikan ini misalnya, yang memperlihatkan Talking Heads membawakan satu-satunya lagu cinta dengan lirik paling kentara yang pernah mereka ciptakan. Sebuah lagu yang naif dan agak cheesy sejujurnya. Tapi kesederhanaan lagu itu dan liriknya yang begitu tulus, “I’m just an animal looking for a home. Share the same space for a minute or two,” dijamin akan membuatmu ternganga dengan wajah berseri. Aksi live mereka di lagu ini hanya diberi pencahayaan oleh sebuah lampshade, serius! Dan David Byrne yang berdansa layaknya Fred Astaire akan membuatmu berharap kamu ada di situ, di antara penonton Hollywood’s Pantages Theater pada Desember 1983.

One of my most favorite scene in the history of cinema is also one of the most important history of indie music.
“You gotta hear this one song. It’ll change your life, I swear,” Natalie Portman famously murmured to Zach Braff, and the song did in fact change your life if you were an indie-rock band in the early ‘00s. If “Smells Like Teen Spirit” announced alternative rock’s “Here we are now” moment like a ton of bricks, then those opening notes of the Shins’ “New Slang” cooing softly in Portman’s headphones declared indie rock’s arrival like a handful of feathers. Within months of the film’s festival-circuit premiere and art-house run in the late summer of 2004, the Garden State soundtrack was hovering high on the Billboard chart, thanks largely to this relatively new invention called the iTunes Store. Suddenly, the Shins, Iron & Wine, and scene forefather Nick Drake — all featured on the soundtrack — were a mere Nelly’s Suit away from being No. 1 in America. It’s amazing that the Garden State soundtrack, originally just a mixtape the dude from fucking Scrubs made for himself, was the catalyst for indie rock to officially enter the mainstream, but thanks to it, the door was kicked open for Arcade Fire and Bon Iver to win Grammys, for Vampire Weekend to score a gold record, and for Gotye and fun. to rule radio. Sweet Smell of Success (Alexander Mackendrick, 1957)
Oh if dialogues could kill. Watching this film would brutally murdered you with words. “You’re a cookie full of arsenic!” Who the fuck living on this planet is talking like that! Insane script. Everyone who aspires to write should watch this great film.
Foxygen - We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic (2013)
Kalau kamu pernah bertanya, seperti apa sih jaman keemasan musik Rock? Mungkin album aneh yang seperti jukebox lagu-lagu jadul ini bisa menjawabnya. Coba putar album ini di ruang tamu saat ada ayahmu di sana. Bisa jadi dia akan bertanya padamu, “Bowie? Mick Jagger? The Band? Lou Reed? The Doors?” Nope, it’s Foxygen! 4/5

Four Tet - 0181 (2013)
Ini mungkin lebih tepat disebut sebagai mixtape daripada album. Berisi hanya satu track sepanjang 38 menit yang merupakan kumpulan eksperimen suara sejak pertama kali Four Tet dibentuk. Cukup menarik untuk mengetahui bibit sound-sound awal dari musisi yang sudah mempunyai segudang karya ini. 3/5

Bill Callahan - Dream River (2013)
Hal yang saya suka tiap dengar albumnya Bill Callahan (atau dulu; Smog) adalah liriknya. Salah satu resensi yang menarik adalah dari Exclaim, “Dream River is required reading, without a doubt.” Misal salah satu lirik di Seagull, “I wonder if I’ll ever wake up / I mean really wake up / Wake up and wake you too / First thing that I will do, I will wake you too.” Luar biasa. Ah bisa jadi ini adalah album terbaik Bill Callahan. Bisa jadi begitu. 4/5

Tak ada yang spesial di album ini. Sampai selesai lagu terakhir yang memorable cuma lagu pertamanya, Wave Forms. Islands memang tidak cocok bergalau ria. 1/5

Drake - Nothing Was the Same (2013)
Album terbaik Drake. Album ini luar biasa bisa jadi karena straight to the point, tanpa basa-basi. “Mothafucka never loved us. Remember? Mothafucka!” Haha I love this shit. 4/5

Album debut yang meski terasa bercampur baur layaknya mixtape tapi tak bisa disangkal sangat menyenangkan, mungkin seperti ini yang disebut modern hiphop. 4/5
Villagers - {Awayland} (2013)
Album ini lebih ambisius dan visionary daripada Becoming A Jackal. Lebih kompleks namun tetap nikmat untuk disenandungkan. 3,5/5
Christopher Owens - Lysandre (2013)
Debut album paska Girls yang berdurasi hanya 30 menit dan terasa agak self-indulgent. Saya kira ini hanya intro untuk album sebenarnya dari seorang jenius peramu ballad ini. 3/5
Everything Everything - Arc (2013)
Tiap mendengar band ini saya selalu terganjal oleh suara Jonathan Higgs yang menurut saya berisik dan cerewet. Selain daripada itu Everything Eveything mempunyai musik yang solid, dan album ini memang lebih solid daripada rilisan sebelumnya. Menyenangkan untuk didengar andai vokalisnya bukan si Higgs itu. Haha. 3/5
New Order - Lost Sirens (2013)
Sebuah rilisan sisa-sisa Waiting For The Sirens Call namun anehnya punya lagu-lagu yang lebih mudah dinikmati daripada album mengecewakan di tahun 2005 itu. 3,5/5

Longtime reader and Suehiro Maruo superfan Suzanne just sent us pics of her RIDICULOUSLY AWESOME tattoos. For her sleeve piece, Suzanne worked to carefully compile images from a number of Suehiro Maruo works, including panels from The Laughing Vampire and illustration work featured in his Maruograph art books.
If you can believe it, she says it’s still an in-progress piece, with further details to be added to her arm(!!). The tattoo artist was Piotrek Taton at Good Times in London.holy shit i’m in luv
