If you can find the DVD The Puppet Films of Jiri Trnka, it's a collection of a number of shorts along with this feature-length. Frankly I think it's a little creepy, but good.
One time I tried watching it and I fell asleep, but I finished it on the second attempt and it was pretty good. I'm not really sure what exactly is weird about this film, it's pretty straightforward...
Pretty great for the most part. Nothing like good old southern melodrama. Vivian Leigh... love her, what a great cut eye she gives. She's even better in A Streetcar Named Desire.
