Not dull at all. Problem was, it didn't know what it wanted to be. Tries to be many different things as the film progresses but it doesn't do any of them well. It feels like someone took 3 different scripts and just cut/pasted a beginning, middle, and end from each of them.
It's a visual film. If you go in expecting an action film, watch something else. Don't let the stars of this film, and it's advertising, make you think it's something else.
Can't disagree with one of the quotes on the back saying this film is unwatchable.
If you came for the undead, ignore the cover, title, tagline, and plot description on the back of the box, including one of the other quotes. It's actually a poorly filmed and edited giallo that's completely awful.
With these types of films, there's always the same unrealistic issues.
1. They never come up with a real excuse to why they're filming themselves.
2. Nobody in real life constantly walks around with a camera.
3. When there's imminent danger in real life, and your life or your loved ones are being threatened, nobody still keeps a camera up to their eye and film as they walk around.
4. When there's imminent danger in real life, and your life or your loved ones are being threatened, nobody slowly walks around everywhere.
5. People do use the stabilizer feature found on cameras.
6. You'd think there was a shaky cam button that adds extra shakiness to everything. There's not one.
7. People are usually more excited when they discover they have the first clear video proof of aliens or ghosts.
8. When sharing this discovery with others that live in the house, most people show the video and not just mention something spooky going on, which makes the others mad and stop listening to them.
9. When there's a camera that's moving back and forth, at some point there's going to be a ghost or alien standing in a spot where it wasn't standing before.
10. When there's a camera that's moving back and forth, at some point there's going to be a ghost or alien not standing in a spot where it was standing before, when the camera swings back.
11. When there's a camera that's moving back and forth, the ghost or alien that pops up but then disappears will no doubt show up in a different location, standing motionless.
The only scare thing that I liked was when
the ghost under the sheet vanished. The problem was that it wasn't a perfect scene because after the babysitter turned around, the sheet was still flattening itself but she was acting like it was just a sheet that showed up on the floor.
Jonathan Rosenbaum's Essential Films. Not really essential and just another indication of the bad taste in films he has. If something was really essential, odds are that it would be on other lists as well.
What would normally be a simple subplot for a regular movie, becomes the entire plot of this one. You already know how it's going to end from the very beginning, it's just a matter of waiting out the film. At least it wasn't 2 hours.
Why do people vote for this to win awards, a movie where 1/5 of the time is just someone walking to pad out an already short running time but then rag on Hollywood films? Just to fit in with their crowd?
I got the feeling this was written by some popular or jock kid and just wanted to get back at the kids they bullied by making the two in this film, you know... They extremely minimize the bullying to make it seem like the bullies aren't that bad so we aren't supposed to have any sympathy for them when the one of them has that one single short scene where he's somewhat picked on.
It was good but a bit biased, which could be understood, considering the director. As an example, we hear about the conspiracy theory that The Man blew up the levees with dynamite but there's no mention of the infamous "chocolate city" speech, other than a reference to it on a shirt.
It also went on a bit longer than it needed to, had a lot of contradictions, and some people crying over first world problems, especially with regards to the trailers they got, that slowed it down for me.
There were quite a few large topics and issues that didn't make the cut and we instead had a lot more repetition that could have been avoided. It's over 4 hours long, so it's not like there was a lack of time.
I'm fine with a list that can grow. Nobody is forcing me to watch all of them and there's longer lists here already.
Criterion and Eclipse are never going to stop growing as long as they keep releasing movies. All the lists based on awards and nominees are also going to grow. Some of the critics lists also don't have a set number.
It also isn't going to grow exponentially. That just doesn't make any sense.
The ending could have been a bit better but then I remembered that Will Smith is somewhat of an ass when it comes to him being cast in movies,
so nothing bad could have happened to him. Honestly, I was expecting him to die after he realized the only way he could save his partner was to sacrifice himself.
Another example of bad marketing. They marketed it as an action film but while watching it, I realized it was more of a great example of modern noir. Then I started enjoying it even more.
If you think Tom Cruise is unrealistic as a tough guy, stay away from classic noir films. Many are filled with that sort of stuff.
