Again, very enjoyable flick. I'm starting to wonder if it's the movies that are getting better or is it just me getting more and more used to these films.
I'm watching them chronologically and Moore's Bonds are more entertaining than Connery's (not counting Goldfinger which was a genuinely good film and is still my favorite).
I think it mostly has to do with Bond himself. Connery clearly stopped giving shit in his last films while Moore is still enjoying himself. I also like how from time to time Moore's Bond delivers a very serious and convincing line about his job (for example what it is for him to kill or die) and you start justifying him for killing so many people. Connery just seemed like a dick who enjoys his licence to kill. Whenever I think about Connery's Bond I picture him being a dick, that's what kind of impression he left on me. Whereas Moore is more polite and it sometimes feels like he is actually concerned about something other than how to have sex with every girl he meets, which he does quite often too (sometimes him offering sex gets really creepy).
All in all, Moore does 007 the way I always imagined 007 to be.
Also, the song this time kicks so much ass. My favorite since Live And Let Die and You Only Live Twice.
I also watch them chronologically and it's one of my favorites in a while. Solid story, good acting and far less goofy moments than in the last several films. And then there's
the sheriff... Because we loved him so much the first time. I'm afraid to check on IMDB if he has ever come back in the later films, I don't want to spoil the surprise. And this WAS a surprise. At first I thought it's just a cameo, but then it went on and on and on...
Oh yeah, I also loved that incredible car stunt accompanied by a whistle. Classy.
And that's where all the stupid little things end. Other than that it stays focused and entertaining all the way.
Fine movie. I like Moore as Bond more than Connery in his last couple of films (after he started to say "sh" instead of "s" like he doesh now).
That sheriff was quite a character, wasn't he? Also, a gun that shoots bullets that make you explode like a balloon. Don't forget jumping on crocodiles.
Agree with Larkspur, it dived into MST3K territory a few times throughout the movie, which is awesome.
Also, I don't know if it's just me, but Solitaire looks just like Rose Byrne.
The hate is just ridiculous. I didn't like it very much either, but 1:1 favs/dislike ratio? Come on people, the story isn't anything new and it's very corny, but a lot of work were put into this film and it is watchable. I haven't seen it since it came out and I don't feel like watching it again anytime soon, but it was a very nice cinema experience. I can't believe that so many people just ignore everything and hate it only because of the most annoying fanbase in the world, which this movie indeed has.
Lazenby is much more likable as Bond than Connery to me. I wish he was in more films.
As for the film itself, it was pretty good. The ending was fantastic for a Bond film. But the title sequence was laughably bad. Also, some scenes were really bizarre and I'm not sure if it was intentional or not.
The animated opening was the highlight of the film, it was just too beautiful (I said the same thing about Casino Royale), but this time I enjoyed the rest of the film as well. I don't have much to say about it though. Only maybe that
Alber Finney was a real moron. Did he really need to use the damn flashlight? And did he really need to wave it around as he walked? Was he trying to get noticed?
There were more of these little stupid moments that made me roll my eyes, like the CGI comodo varan or pocket tracking device. But overall it was a fine movie.
The most depressing thing about this movie is that people say it's the scariest movie of all time, but I didn't flinch once, I wasn't afraid watching the movie, I wasn't afraid the night after. And so my last effort to ever be scared again by a movie goes nowhere. Too bad. I guess I'm just too brave. :D
But seriously, the whole idea of ghosts and this astral world doesn't scare me, because it's so unrealistic, in a way that it's not mysterious enough. It's explained too well how it works, what the evil spirits want and apparently you can even fight them back. So what's so scary? It creates some kind of weird new religion, but I know that it's not how our world works, so I'm not scared.
Also, I recently watched Paranormal Activity (which was neither scary or well made. At least Insidious looked pretty and had a creepy atosphere going on) and now I'm very dissapointed in what people consider scary these days. Ghosts? Really? In a suburban location? In a place where you can easily find help? In a place where you feel safe in day time? WHERE'S THE HORROR? Since when being in your house laying in your bed is scarier than being in the woods or in a haunted castle miles from civilization? I know where the film producers are going with this idea, but I could talk for hours explaining why that's not scary at all. Then again what do I know? I wasn't scared by a movie in a long time, but at least scarier movies leave me with this haunting feeling for a while and this one didn't.
@JoeMorrissy
They did say that, you just probably weren't paying attention.
Bela's werewolf didn't even look like a wolf. It was a german shepherd for some reason, which isn't even the most wolfy looking kind of dog. And Chaney's werewolf resembled a monkey more than a wolf.
I don't know why, but even with all the effort to make a scary atmosphere (sooooo much foooooog), the movie was still hilarious. And not in a good way.
The most original concept for a movie. EVER!
For casual horror fans (like myself) I recommend to watch only this and the original. Watch Cinemassacre's Monster Madness to catch up with the rest of the series.
Good movie, although it's obviously more relatable to women, but still I liked it very much.
Besides the main themes of the film there were many enjoyable little moments that can only be found in Ghibli films, such as the pineapple eating scene (it reminded me of the times when our family tried a coconut for the first time, I had the same reaction) :D.
I thought it was great. Nice music, perfect cast, outstanding visuals, believable action. I don't know how historically accurate are the ships, the guns etc., but they looked convincing enough. I'm happy with this movie. I only wanted to see some sea battles and I got way much more.
I thought it was great. I love how over the top and far fetched the premise is. If you don't like this kind of stuff, you might hate it, but to me it never gets too over the top. Although, the more I think about it the more the whole idea behind the film seems less and less logical, but it is still an extremely fun and eganging movie.
Also, I loved the satire of the japanese horror films.
You can take this movie for what it is without comparing it to what Star Wars used to be, but even then it's one of the most boring and stupid films I have ever seen.
In my eyes it's not a prequel. Prequels usually suck and this doesn't. Not only that, but also it's much better than the original movies (in my opinion).
What made the movie so special? The performances. I loved: Xavier, Mystique, the crystal lady (not for her acting though), Magneto and Kevin Bacon.
I found it heart breaking that magneto and Dr. X, Dr. X and Mystique, such lovable characters, such convincing friends will turn into enemies. An even more heartbreaking fact is that this truly great film is supposedly a prequel to some mediocre forgetable trilogy. They should have called it a reboot. That way they would have avoided some plotholes too.
Ok, I'm praising the movie too much. It's far from perfect (it felt a little too long and it had some moments of bad writting), but it is definitelly worth a watch.
I don't think that you can call the poster (which is finally gone) a spoiler anymore. I've watched the movie five minutes ago, but I knew the ending my whole life from various tv shows (like The Simpsons), parodies etc. Even the fact that there's
a prequel to this movie about the rise of the apes which takes place on earth gives everything away.
You really have to live under a rock to not know that the planet the scientists arrives to
is actually Tatooine from Star Wars and the apes are evolved wookies.
I have no idea why so many people hate it. Most of the time I hear the complain that it has too many villains and not enough time to develope them. I don't agree. Maybe three story lines in one film is too much, but they were tied pretty well together and had the same overall theme: revenge and forgiveness. Also, I liked the fact that
Sandman killed uncle Ben
, however it's also a very frequent complain for no apparent reason. Basically everything what bothered the general audience didn't bother me at all (like the USA flag, wtf? Big fockin' deal). Maybe not being nitpicky is my super power.
P.S. Yes, Venom was poorly done. I agree with that.
Did I really watch it? Oh, god... I guess I did...
Awful. Awful even for a twilight film. The very first film was awful too, in my opinion, but it was stupidly awful, laugh-worthy, innocent mindless little story for teenagers. This one is just awfully awful, nothing amusing about it.
I still can't believe I actually watched it...
