It's been about two years since I read the book but from everything I remember about the main character, I thought Per Oscarsson did a great job in acting out the deliriousness he slipped further and further into. I'm not a psychologist, but I'd say this is a perfect study of manic depression, or what we now know of as bipolar disorder.
God I loved movies like this when I was growing up; The Rock, Air Force One, True Lies, The Peacemaker, etc. Hollywood was going full scale "USA! USA! USA!" in trying to show off military prowess. It fit right in with my fascination of fighter jets, Tom Clancy novels and Goldeneye.
Overproduced, oversaturated garbage. A bunch of yelling and emotional urgency with no substance. This is a movie produced soley for Apple, Google, Facebook employees and the rest of the tech/Silicon valley industry, Will Wheaton worshipping, Call of Duty/Mass Effect generation. Designed with the products they make, virally talked (advertised) about with the networks they run. It's a product, nothing more. A turd with diamonds sprinkled on it. Its a movie in the same sense that Fox News is news.

'Cause I'd take pleasure in guttin' you boy.John Mason: Are you sure you're ready for this?
Stanley Goodspeed: I'll do my best.
John Mason: Your "best"! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and fuck the prom queen.
Stanley Goodspeed: Carla was the prom queen.
John Mason: Really?
Stanley Goodspeed: [cocks his gun] Yeah.

One of my favorite B scifi movies...loved it as a kid. It picks up a lot from "The Thing" as far as the isolation.I think its based on a Philip K Dick short story.
