Instant favorite. Hands down, this is one of the best films I've seen.
It's been a long time since I have been so submerged in a movie. When it ended I had an impulse to see it again from the beginning, but common sense stopped me.
Zulawski is clearly a genious, but judging by the response this may be his only masterpiece. "Trzecia czesc nocy" had a really great beginning, but lost impetus halfway in. "L'amour braque" was just messy.
One-Eyed Jacks is indeed an original western film. The plot is typical and basic, but it adds more psychological depth than is common for the genre. The cinematography is also great. The seaside setting provided a fresh breeze and a contrast to the oh-so dusty plains.
However, to really enjoy this movie you must be as much in love with Brando's herculean ego as he is himself. And why does he insist on mumbling every line of dialogue?

Really weak effort from Bava in my opinion, and I didn't watch the "House of Exorcism" version. Watch instead "Kill Baby Kill" or "Bay of Blood" or just about anything with Argento for surrealistic giallo actually worth your while. Conversely, if you are amused by a lollipop fixated demon this might be just up your alley.
Pretty much your average H-wood action comedy flick, ... until that scene with Elgar's "Pomp and Circumstance" that just blows everything out of the water. Just brilliant.
Shishido Jo from Suzuki's Branded to Kill, A Colt Is My Passport and Gate of Flesh is a real badass, but the duo of Sugawara Bunta and Tanaka Kunie here might kick his ass. This film deserves a prize for being so unforgiving, probably the most violent film I've seen. Highly recommended if you can stomach it.
This is a movie that tries very hard to appeal to your sympathy to tell the horrors of nuclear war, and does it pathetically. Time is more wisely spent watching Dr. Strangelove again, or seek out Genbaku no Ko by the underrated Shindo Kaneto. Or you can of course watch Grave of the Fireflies again. That being said I was quite enthralled with the finale.
Even if the story was a bit unfocused, this one was still thoroughly enjoyable drawing similarities to some of Japan's finest: it's visual like Koreeda, raw like Imamura and fun like Ozu.
Should I watch this for the comedy or the portrayal of youth? It was too cliched to be either.. As cmm1285 said: "Only a slight step-up from Mannequin."
I thought Nippon-koku Furuyashiki-mura was the dullest movie on the Kinema-list, but I think this one tops it. The other one had at least changed scenery and stories once in a while.. What did Rosenbaum see in this one?
Ozu at his darkest is reminiscent of Naruse's tragic tales, but still retains that strong personality and flair he always inject into his movies. I was quite surprised by how good this movie is, certainly one of top three Ozu's for me.
Quite refreshing to see b-trash like this once in a while. Prisoners shipwrecked on a remote island, black magic and fish-people, and Barbara Bach, what else can you ask for in a movie?
