Surprisingly, this was a lot better than I was expecting. The CGI was incredible (although that's rarely the hallmark of a great film), the story was succinct and kept the flow going throughout without lagging as well. That is despite its length (which didn't seem that long overall). Very entertaining, nothing really bored me or made me fidget. I saw a couple of little flaws but nothing which irritated me too much, and I can be quite picky.
Also, very comic-booky, which I liked (with dabs of beautiful shots too), whereas Sam Raimi's Spider-man was sort of Power Rangers-actiony, which I still liked. This one didn't try to layer on the emotionalism either, which I appreciated. It understood that it was a different film (with many unavoidable similarities), and it had its own unique approach. A different sort of film than Raimi's version, but it holds its own, and I too am excited for the sequels. Congrats Mr. Webb, you've done it again! :)
Robert Redford is decent enough in his role, despite his character's flaws. On the other hand, Barbra Streisand is a whiny bitch of the utmost caliber throughout the entire film with maybe one good line or two. Even in situations where I would otherwise sympathize with her character, I couldn't bring myself to actually care and in fact keep wishing Redford would hit her in the face with a frying pan. Overall, a pointless endeavor.
You might be right, monty, although I gave Gran Torino an 8 and this I gave a 7. I'm going to have to let it sink in a little bit more though... certainly the direction was nearly infallible for a debut feature, and of course Hal Holdbrook was extremely convincing and powerful.
I too like the idea for this and have been considering making my own IMDb version for sometime... but I just can't take it as seriously as I otherwise would because of the inclusion of Mr. Popper's Penguins...
I liked the movie, I didn't love it. But despite not sharing the critics' exultation, I found one thing very compelling: I mistakenly thought this film was released after the major events of WWII unfolded. I saw the famous rabbit / pheasant hunting scene as a metaphor for the holocaust (which of course had not fully transpired yet), and the grand party comparable to the war itself, strange bedfellows and all. Yes, backroom deals were made, former enemies became friends only to share a common enemy etc. All of these alliances to me bespoke the revolutions of the cogs of war... and maybe Renoir was thinking back to the first world war, and dually looking ahead. Either way, I think the film is given a new meaning when seen in this fashion. In fact, it almost seems prophetic.
and i know there were "blue films" since pretty much the beginning of film, but wikipedia actually does consider this to be the first hardcore pornographic film.
I agree with the complainants below me (except I thought Shirley MacLaine suffered from bad acting in parts, too). Yet despite this, and despite being pretty unfunny for an American audience, it did have its moments. The photography, for one thing, was simply gorgeous.
