On the better side of schmaltzy, overlong uber-American horse racing movies. Which means, still better stay away if you despise this kind of inspirational sport films 101.
This Frearsian neo-noir could be one of the visually brightest films I've ever seen, it's striking. The mood is something else, like an unexpected blend of Aki Kaurismäki (for the John Hurt character) and Martin McDonagh or the more dramatic films of the Coens.
It's also pleasing to see the young, impatient Tim Roth - he's one of a kind. Another shoutout for Laura del Sol: that bite .. o.O
What a cool flick! Maybe one of the funniest noirs (do they have such a category?) thanks to the bickering, anxious pair of contractors. Together with the great lead and the easygoing soundtrack it makes for a little noir gem, although the script could have been better for the final act. Still really liked it.
American critic Roger Ebert gave the film an extremely positive review after its world premiere at the Chicago International Film Festival in November 1967 (when it still went by the name I Call First). He called the film "a work that is absolutely genuine, artistically satisfying and technically comparable to the best films being made anywhere. I have no reservations in describing it as a great moment in American movies."
It's on the more likable side of sport cheese, I'll give it that much. I agree with Siskoid's criticism though: what exactly is the deal with that Rudy guy?
Nothing spells "dated" like a Spencer-Tracy-fronted 50s comedy from Vincente Minnelli.
No front, it's not bad, it's just .. the opposite of new and fresh. Carping aside, the nightmare sequence was a highlight!
For me, this started like a promising, classic comedy in the first 30 minutes and transformed into a misshapen result not unlike Hepburn's attempt at a waffle by the final third. Uh.
The level of darkness and putridity somehow reminded me of the German film Der Goldene Handschuh (2019). If you want to bewitch your first date with a killer double feature, there you are.
Nice set designs accompanied by moody tinting, an interesting look at what a history film would have looked like in 1911. Unfortunately, there is zero cinematic flow ..
Just relaxing on the couch with your headphones, petting the cat, free love,
casually getting an abortion
.. ah, the good life of 20s Soviet Russia.
Some morbid trivia from IMDb: Both male lead actors died tragically a few years after the film was made. Nikolai Batalov (Kolya the husband) died at 37 from a long bout with tuberculosis. Vladimir Fogel (Volodya) committed suicide at 27.
