The emperor is wearing no clothes.
But of course I'm sure certain film deities with intellectual capacities far beyond that of mortal men will be able to see the immense beauty of this divine masterpiece :)
I did a tour as a combat engineer in Afghanistan, and during bomb training we had a lot of good laughs about what NOT to do, as seen in this movie. It is so unrealistic it almost becomes a comedy.
What did you expect from a Van Damme movie? Of the movies he's been in, this is one of the most enjoyable, and it has an atmosphere you won't find in a lot of other movies.
I love how there can easily go 10 seconds between anybody saying something. Kurosawa was great at putting the audience in the same kind of relaxed meditation as the actors.
1999 was indeed a good year for filmmaking. This is pretty much the opposite of Fight Club. Fight Club explains why life is meaningless crap - American Beauty explains why life is so beautiful. Both brilliant films. Nothing else can be said about it - brilliant.
