As basically everyone has said - Emily Blunt brings out the best in yet another movie with her talent and beauty (ref Sicario, Edge of Tomorrow (okay, fine, Cruise wasn't ALL bad...)) - otherwise this movie is interesting and had all us plebs guessing thanks to the multiple red herrings being tossed into our lap. Capable film-making, a few steps away from being masterful.
If you're the kind of person who thinks romance and soul mates is sappy, you probably won't enjoy this - but if you have feelings then your heart will ache at multiple points through this film. Stunning artwork, purity of soul and plenty of things which are really best done through anime - I hear JJ Abrams is doing an American remake, and I hope he does it justice (unlike the hamfisted romance in Star Wars Ep 7).
As you may infer from the fairly low favourite:check ratio, this isn't likely to be many people's favourite movie, but it is quite a spectacular looking movie, with very believable visuals, a fair (if archetypical) performance by the leads (although Reilly really does most of the work) and all round bloody good giant monster entertainment. There's something primal about fighting off a giant spider, after all.
If you liked Pacific Rim, you'll probably like this one too.
The fight scenes from this movie are etched into my memory as a child - I loved it - and I will watch it again soon and see how I feel about it - but it will always have a special place for me.
I think when people say "Korean actors are overacting" they either don't understand Korean culture or humor or are just trolling. Perhaps the same can be said of Bollywood - in any event, this movie is very entertaining, an excellent monster movie, standard commentary about bureaucracy, pollution and family - all round enjoyable.
Rooney Mara's acting is a strong in this film, critical to the catalyst moment for this whydunnit - the cinematography as aniforprez says is truly beautiful, with some amazing shots and pacing that builds up and down in each act, with a fairly Soderbergh feel of Ocean's 11 style storytelling towards the end.
The less you know about the plot the better, but the movie touches on a few interesting topics
admittedly some of which are subverted by the denouements of the plot towards the end
:
1. Big pharma and medications
2. Consciousness and its role in
the justice system
3.
Capitalism, in particular financial trading
4. Depression in society
All in all, a pretty enjoyable film, with very few slow moments - and even those are painted with an expert camerabrush - and thankfully, not at all Steven Soderbergh's last film.
the remote control scene, where he rewinds time and prevents his buddy from dying.... what even...
- I haven't actually seen the original but I would NOT watch it, frankly this version disturbed me enough already - with its skillful suspension of disbelief (most of the time), its fairly rational and competent characters - its just messed up.
Pierrot talking to Majid's son, Ebert's smoking gun clue where the character refers to Pierrot as the one who is doing all these films, Pierrot doesn't have a VHS in his room, but of course his parents aren't home that often and it seems the tapes always arrive when Pierrot isn't in the scene or doesn't show up at all.
I thought it might be worth commenting here, putting my own thoughts up onto the internet, given pretty much every (unhelpful) comment on this page goes something like "Okay movie, bad ending, didn't enjoy" - for those who intend to watch the movie, you must of course be made aware that the ending is unconventional - surprising for some, who are less used to Coen brothers shenanigans and who prefer a more conventional story telling device - let's see what happens
Story: A guy comes across some money, someone is hunting him for that money, the sheriff finds out and works to protect the guy.
The guy is killed. The killer gets away. The sheriff doesn't catch him and ends with a long monologue about a couple of dreams he had.
Themes : In my view, aside from the movie actually being enjoyable, it is also full of depth - about the meaning of life, about unstoppable fate and about knowing your place and weakness in the world and maybe even a bit about moral relativism.
As StefanoEarnest and others have said - you need to understand Coen brother's movies in that light - although even without conscious recognition of these themes, the movie is gripping and intense. I'd highly recommend it.
I'm going to have to disagree with Siskoid on this one - I almost fell asleep at multiple points in the movie - the acting wasn't bad per se, and the action wasn't bad per se, and the story was strictly speaking fairly middling - but it really did feel like an attempt at Sherlock Holmes in the Tang dynasty, but with more melodrama.
There definitely needed to be more emotion put into the characters to make them likable - a little less CG and fishwire, and a bit more backstory and relate-ability...
1. More "diversity", both in cutesy animals (both CG and puppetlike), worlds
Probably the only real point of Rose and Finn's pointless travels
and characters
I think they are trying to appeal to a Chinese audience?
.
2. Epic space battles, with ships that get bigger and bigger.
One wonders why lightspeed kamikaze jumping through fleets isn't a more common thing though, given its devastating power.
3. Somewhat shoehorned romance.
Poe getting cougar'd all over the place
4. Mark Hamill being awesome.
Yoda
bringing a bit of awesome.
5. Quite a fair amount of philosophical navel gazing...
6. Rey and Kylo Ren's arcs developing well.
7. Animal activism.
The scene with Chewie trying to eat the tiny googly eyed birds was amusing
8. Rian Johnson throwing away a bunch mysteries JJ Abrams put in.
Bye Snoke! Bye Captain Phasma, who is apparently a dude? Hello lockpick fellow who I don't know if he is going to be a relevant character in the future or not...
9. Humour that was usually funny.
10. Hope for the future of the series.
What an odd sort of movie - it's like a bottle episode - curious dark comedy that doesn't always grab your attention, plus ... so many Chekhov's guns...
I was hoping
all the guns in the crates would be used, John Woo style, but was of course disappointed / pleasantly surprised when they were barely touched.
This is one of my favourite Disney movies (must be in my blood or something) which is just a lot of fun, has great songs, sticks in your head and is all round good fun.
I was expecting more comments and more love for this movie. It needs to be watched, folks - it is full of delightful fun and scenes that will stick in your head for years to come.
As you can see, the art style is completely in the form of 2D art, which makes the beloved franchise lose a little of its charm and feel, but the characters behaviour is somewhat on point, with a few oddities for the sake of storytelling. It leaves plenty unresolved, although you're not entirely sure at the end whether you care to see any more.
Generally enjoyable - I must say I was quite young when I watched it, therefore rendering me a little out of touch with any themes, and largely ogling Kate Beckinsale.
