'Please remember Vanity Fair is a very vain, wicked foolish place full of all sorts of humbug, falseness and pretension…not a moral place certainly, nor a merry one, although very noisy – a world where everyone is striving for what is not worth having.' says the narrator.
-- Becky Sharp astonishes us in the first 2 episodes as she climbs up the social ladder from a humble beginning.
-- Episode 3 is where her fortunes starts getting reversed and we begin to wonder what will happen to her?
-- Episode 4 & 5 - Becky starts scheming and planning more wickedly and gets more obsessed with money and fame. Meanwhile Amelia wins our hearts with her kindness, goodness and makes us feel for her at her misfortunes.
-- Episode 6 is where Becky Sharp crosses the limit and breaks her husband's heart and her family
-- Episode 7 is supposed to be the end for Becky Sharp and a new beginning for Amelia. However i disliked how Becky is shown as remorseless and as still some sort of heroine in the end. Amelia wins our hearts at the end.
I had mixed feelings for the story... Yet this is a drama not to be missed, especially if you like Olivia Cooke.
Olivia Cooke's transformation from a likable person to a bitch is astonishing! (and shows how good is her acting).
I do not like radical feminists and all going gaga over Greta Gerwig. Hence this is a unbiased review of Little Women.
I am new to this classical story, initially i found this very boring, well atleast until the first half of the movie. Then due to the character development, we get interested on what happens to each character just as we would when watching a TV Series.
The story is simple- 4 sisters with different ideals, dreams and goals who live in poverty (lower middle class), along with their mother. (father is away on serving the army).
They are taught to be caring for the poorer sections of the soceity inspite of their financial struggles.
The eldest character Jo is a radical feminist, who refuses to marry a man, and wants to be financially successful as a novel writer. She has some good qualities too, except for the feminist part. This role is given to Saoirse , and Saoirse's performance and acting skills are brilliant and her casting seems to be very apt.
The second sister Meg is the prettiest, could have been a model or actress if she had wanted to, but she is content to live a good family life with her middle class husband John whom she dearly loves. Very good character and Emma watson fits the role perfectly.
The third sister Amy, wants to be an artist and kind of has jealousy over Jo. She eventually marries an interesting character (I dont want to spoil it here).
The last sister Beth is truly playful and the most innocent little sister of them all.
The rich neighbour family - a grandpa and his grandson Laurie befriends this 4 little women and they help them as good friends. And whether that rich grandson who is also a handsome fellow, marries any of them forms the climax.
I agree the story is relatable to many, who live in poverty or among several sisters/ brothers, their jealousy, caring nature, fights, love - all domestic joys and struggles are portrayed with lot of 'family sentiment' in the movie. and as such family audiences would like this movie.
The story is very slow and requires a lot of patience to watch, but at the end it gives you the satisfaction of having watched a good movie with some brilliant acting performances from the star cast.
This deserves a rating of 7/10 (can go upto 7.5/10).
@WilliamBravin True, the film would have been much better without that unneccessary twist at the end...
Watched this one , as this is one of the much acclaimed films of Francois Ozon. But i regard 'Jeune & Jolie (2013)' as his Masterpiece with stunning performance by Marine Vacth. Jeune & Jolie is much better than this, still this one's worth a watch.
This is not a bad movie but its just over hyped and overrated... mediocre pre-teen story (kinda depresssing one at that, even if its translated as "honest" by the critics), with decent performance by the lead actors..
True score: 6/10

Talented Shailene Woodley's earliest role in a feature film (not including her roles in Disney Films and TV Shows).Good movie albeit a low budget one apparently.
Shailene's role is short in this one, but she really shines in it.
