Almost all characters are Italians during the 60s/70s, but they all speak in English, with a strong Italian accent and sometimes throw in random Italian sentences/words throughout the movie. The script seems to run by the rule that emphasizing randomly the word “Gucci” makes everything sounds cool. The historical reconstruction is odd. Rodolfo Gucci lives in one of the most famous museum mansions in Milan, and every person with a bit of culture knows that place has nothing to do with Gucci’s family. They made a joke out of several characters, especially Paolo Gucci, in a way that obviously offended the heirs. The plot is erratic at best: it is impossible to follow the time jumps. Then, I guess the aesthetic appease those who think about Italy as a nation of men with thin moustaches, drinking red wine and chasing women. I personally think this movie, from an artistic point of view, was not needed. And even as a money-making title, I find it hard to understand how a production of this level can come up so coarse.
Bluntly, rather than a movie this seems a 2 hours and something long error. Predictable plot, dull characters, cheesy CG, rough editing...man, I wonder how could they allow that. No wonder it was a huge flop.
I found this movie great. An historical account over some of the most dramatic moments and realities in the history of Italy (related to Italian Mafia) narrated through the typical narrative style of Bellocchio's directing (which in this case I've found to be extremely Shakespearean).
Could this use of "dispositivo cinematografico" being a little bit too apologetic of the figure of the main protagonist, an assassin, a criminal?
Although, Tommaso Buscetta (the protagonist, that Favino plays), seems to have really been such charismatic, hedonistic and romantic figure.
Surely a movie for civic engagement, as to be expected by Bellocchio.
John,
I read the article you shared...actually the author kinda nailed it, and I changed my mind (guess it's better be right than coherent...).
Personally I enjoyed it, but it's true that compared with other animation movies it can't stand a chance in terms of plot.
Characters are animals, gathered together in a sing competition, where the destiny of an old theater and its owner mr. Moon (an ever-optimistic koala) are at stake.
These characters give depth and maturity to the movie, unveiling the great spectrum of personalities that orbit around the world of music, each with its bright and dark sides, with ambitions, insecurities and, overall, love for music.
It's worthwhile winning an Oscar. Brilliant and profound. About the camera work, which seems to have amazed everyone, I'd suggest to get over the technical fact (also because a fake long take with digital technology cant be compared on technical level and acting skills, with a movie, say, from '50) and appreciate the reason why this photography is so accurate. Here's an additional lens we could watch this movie with: in the era of superheroes movies, of internet, it's like there are no more certainties, no more authorities or figures to look at. We are searching for a higher form of humanity, an hypertrophic one, a deviated self to which we sacrifice so much on the altar of recognition and success, and in turn never being satisfied.
I'm quite surprised no one commented this before, therefore let me start the ball rolling.
Three facts I believe to be true about it: first, it's below the average quality of Eastwood's directing, which I consider wonderful most of the time; second, even if so it's still quite enjoyable for those into war movies (though in a list of sniping-centered movies is beaten easily by titles such as "the enemy at the gates", in my opinion); thirdly, at the end of the day it seems to me that all the conflictual elements explored during the narration, about war and its consequences on those involved in it, are wiped out by a big republican american ideology on the lines of "you gotta do what you gotta do".

Wonderful movie, hope it will be put in some lists soon because it deserves it, showing us the great screenplay and directing skills by Woody Allen (the one we used to appreciate before all those cheesy movies in European capitals he's making lately).
A must-see for actors and those who loves theater, for a sharp satyric perspective on egos and geniality in art, in a light, still profound narrative; its refined comicality recalls me about ancient latin comedy.
This blended mix with a bit of "Groundhog Day"'s idea and Matrix armor suites and some aliens you've probably already seen somewhere else, it's gonna give you a scifi movie of average quality. Good entertainment for a couple of hours but nothing more than that.
They tried to make Peter Parker's character seems like the stereotypical idea of a nowadays teenager, resulting the film to be a boring non-sense spiral of incomprehensible dialogues and situations.
The death of Gwen Stacy meant something to those who read comic books and due much more respect than what has been given in this movie.
Only worse thing than a bad movie, its a bad movie which could have been good. In my opinion the makers totally screw with the rhythm, make the whole thing hard to follow until the end.
Well with such interesting premises in the plot, I'd say that it could have been much much better if than that.
I found it not elegant, above the lines.
It's a good entertainment though.
I absolutely don't recommend it.
A lot of aspects could be much better but first of all the script it's full of empty moments that try to be hilarious...with such remarkable predecessors my expectations have been disappointed.
I must admit it...a lot of beautiful movies in these last years have been made by french producer and director.
This is great movie talking about emotional contents...not a fake "wanna-be cultural movie" like "Midnight in Paris".
I really appreciated!
without movies like: "Mamma Mia!", "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" and "Grease" this list isn't actually complete at all!
