@Marijn I would love a feature that if I add a list to my watchlist, it would automatically add all unchecked movies of that list to my watchlist. Initially I thought it would work that way, but unfortunately it doesn't. I think it would have to be an option that you can set in your profile settings whether you want to use it or not.
@Nuclear Planet "But how can you expect people to act so positively about a change when there's not really much demand for it??"
Well, it was the most upvoted feature on the trello-board, so there was demand for it. I do not object to the fact they implemented it. I actually feel this site could need some way to promote contributing and linking the different functionalities. In essence an activity stream is how that can be achieved.
But, the way it is implemented right now, or more precisely integrated right now, is not the right way imo. It is too much in your face. It has taken over the site basically.
What I expected the activity stream to be is something like this: http://www.moviemeter.nl/updates/ . Basically a ticker that shows where the recent post were made. It would encourage more discussion of individual movies on the comment sections.
The way it is presented right now, is this big ugly thing, that takes too much space for what (irrelevant to me) information it presents. Why does it show the movie with poster that was ticked by user X on a separated line, as well as in the first line of the message? It is inefficient in space and creates uninteresting information dumps which only cause people to have to excessively scroll.
I also would like some personalization. Not only do I want to be able to control what other will see from me, but also what I can see from others.
Furthermore, I don't agree that they are on the front page of a movie. The activity stream should not be core function of this site, but an extra feature that you could use. If it was only on the activity pane and not on almost every main page of every movie/profile/homepage I think this feature wouldn't have created such backlash.
I like the idea of the new feature, but I hate the execution. It has completely taken over (visual) design of the site and not in a pleasing way. Currently there is too much information on the stream organized very poorly and "loud".
What originally attracted me to this site, besides the awesome functionality, was the quiet visual design. I'm afraid that this part of the site is complete gone at the moment and I miss it dearly. I hope this will be addressed in the near future.
Finally an action movie that gets it right: It shows the plot instead of talking about it and it shows the action instead of hiding it in frantic close-ups and hyper-editing. Thank you for this, Soderbergh, you have redeemed yourself for Ocean's Twelve.
The main reason for the difference is that the IMDb Top 250 is based on "regular voters only". IMDb does not disclose what this term specifically means.
I tried looking for one, but couldn't find any from an official source.
4 years ago there was a poll for the best Flemish movie (Prime Star Award). The public could vote for 50 films on a shortlist composed by critics and directors. Unfortunately I couldn't find the complete result and/or the shortlist. I tried contacting the VAF but they didn't have it either. Still need to contact Prime for that.
Het zou ook mooi zijn als de officiele lijsten erop komen; dus de top 250, Alternatieve Top 100, Tip 250 en Top recent, maar ik heb geen zin om die constant te updaten :P
I kinda like this top 1000. It certainly isn't the best Top 1000 out there, but it is a lot more accessible.
The fact that it's British makes it a nice companion to the other top 1000's on this site, which are by American critics (or TSPDT's consensus list) and it therefore offers some atypical inclusions.
Collecting the URLs it struck me that the list has a curious love for Rock 'n' Roll movies (like The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle, Dig!, The Decline of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years, Rock 'n' Roll High School). It also includes some unexpected and dubious choices, like Ace Venture, Austin Powers, Mean Girls)
All in all it's a nice list, which is more main stream oriented than the other top 1000's, but certainly not without hidden gems.
