I loved every ounce of this superficial sensory overload of debauchery. Every single minute. And if you're as big as a fan of Scorsese as I am, then you will too. Magnificent to watch. And not once did I feel fatigued at the length.
For a series based on a children's book, the Hobbit movies are great fun. The film uses a Disney aesthetic that lends well to the tale and the action scenes are nicely choreographed and fun (even if animated for half the time).

Sinister is worth watching late at night to accompany a very creepy atmosphere. The plot, though bland, is executed in an interesting way which will grab you and leave you unsatisfied. Of course, that isn't the point. The point is to scare you, and I'd say it does the job well. 7/10
The Conjuring is a basic popcorn horror flick with some great cinematography and kid actors who aren't annoying - though It's much too average to recommend. 6/10
I think it's the soundtrack which makes it so hard-hitting.
RFAD is an interesting, somewhat overdramatic portrayal of drug addiction and dealing, the character development and relationships are strong and gripping, and boy, the way the relationships unfold is absolutely brutal.
I don't think the "it's disturbing" comments should keep you away, it's probably not as bad as you think it will be. However the "it's unforgettable" comments are pretty accurate, which I think is, again, due to the soundtrack.

Fatherhood and loyalty to your blood are themes that hit me really hard for some indiscernible reason. The film is set into three parts, all relating to the important role of fatherhood to your sons identity.
A strong trope that interests me is sociopathy, and to see Avery's lack of love manifest itself into AJ's sociopathy in part three, really hurt to watch.
I find this film beautiful and it remains my favourite film of 2013.

Fight Club is a good film, a versatile film, but not particularly sensible. It doesn't make a lot of sense, correct? Brainwashing people so that they may break out of their daily routine to join a cult, which aims to do the opposite of what its causing, correct? It's confusing, but its sheer barbaric nature of male chauvinism and aggressive campaigns against our purposeless existence of consumerism, is utterly interesting and works to a blurry extent. It blasts through the red tape of gender equality and passive aggressive society, and blatantly holds up a sign stating "men have been neutered". Whether you believe we have, is up to you, but Fight Club certainly makes a strong case on why we have. This is where fighting comes in. Seen as a primitive rite of passage from boyhood to "manhood", the meaning is applied to these men who have supposedly forgotten their roots of "manliness". Now what this all means in the end is still hard to decipher, and I haven't read the book to judge whether it is just satire on nihilism and anarchy, but the film is testosterone fuelled and unapologetic in its message to this generations "average man", who is softened by consumer goods and lack of strong male influence.
It also has a pretty cool story and a disgusting art style, which generates a gritty, urban vibe.
Whether the film is overrated or not is a different story, and one that I don't want to get into, for I feel that just calling things "overrated" is a shitty fucking opinion that should be melted in a frunace! It's certainly not the greatest film of all time, but it explores some interesting questions that are left unanswered for good reason. If you're as angsty as my young blood, then give Fight Club a shot.

Deemed by many as a must-watch for any film lover and a general masterpiece of cinema, it takes the Tolkien lore and follows every mite of it to a magnificently detailed degree (which shows in the movies runtime). I don't know what falls into the category of "masterpiece" these days for I'm not well-rounded in cinema, however if I had to put my money on it, i'd say Fellowship, and the trilogy itself, comes pretty close as it draws in all forms of fans and movie goers, whether you're an art-house Latte sipper or a veteran who thinks the golden age of cinema died long ago, it's hard to deny the excellence that is The Lord of the Rings.
If you haven't found the time to watch any of the films so far, then clear a day, find a comfy position, buy some snacks and watch the films back to back in all their glory.

Typical popcorn Sci-Fi which, as mentioned by many, incorporates a lot of themes and ideas previously explored from other Sci-Fi films and books. Unfortunately it doesn't do anything new or groundbreaking with the concepts, which is a shame. But overall I enjoyed it for its visuals and interesting story + setting. If you're looking for a good saturday night blockbuster then consider Oblivion.

I'm starting to think that Blomkamp isn't for me. Elysium and District 9 feel very similar which, too me, isn't a positive for I disliked District 9.
Elysium felt like a missed opportunity. I wanted it to be an epic space conquest from the dregs of Earth to the station of Elysium. A futuristic revolution where Matt Damon & co unite the prisoners of Earth to fight the tyranny of Elysium, filled with political turmoil, multiple branching plotlines and that sense of conflict being on an epic scale that the setting so needs. On paper it looks like this, but due to odd pacing, flimsy storytelling and a short runtime, it isn't.
This is a subjective expectation which wasn't the sole perpetrator of my disappointment. My disappointment is (as I said earlier) that I just can't enjoy Blompkamps style. It's ugly and exhausting; I'll be sure to avoid his films from here on out.
If you enjoyed District 9 then you'll enjoy this, albeit not as much.

You could argue that this is better than Goodfellas. It's an incredibly entertaining film, that paints a glamorous portrait of Vegas criminality. It's got your usual Scorses crime-fiction schtick where he focusses on stylish cinematography over hard-hitting themes. which is great! I couldn't ask for more from a Scorsese gangster film.

As hyperbolic as he is in real life; Tom Cruise does a surprisingly good job at playing a stonecold sociopath.
Collateral is great. The story is compellingly fresh, and the action scenes are infrequent and intense. Hollywood should pump out more action movies like this; they are a saturday night treat. 8/10
Arguably style over substance, Pulp Fiction certainly has a lot going for it. Engaging dialogue, strong performances and an unpredictable, intense narrative.

i can't find a single thing wrong with this film, and i'm glad i ticked it off the bucket list; it is a genuine masterpiece.
i'm disappointed in myself for not being able to appreciate it like i had originally wanted too. feelings of ineffable unsatisfaction. hype is a movie killer.
gosh, deniro is something isn't he? loved the film, no, adored it. the psychology behind travis is confusing and subtle, keeping you intrigued in his character throughout. and boy, does that that intrigue pay off. i initially feared that having seen all of scorsese's newer films and being accustomed to there style, that this film would feel too distant. this is most definitely untrue. 10/10
space is terrifying and gravity captures this fact so well. gravity does not rely on clever writing and a twisting plot to tell a story. everything, from the adventure to the emotion, is expressed in the cinematography and a level of cgi which is simply unfounded in other action blockbusters. 8/10
this was a really fun mock noir film that has a golden sense of humour and some hilarious johnny gossamer satire. not a fan of the whole 'last minute save' device used in the action scenes, makes the intensity feel rather fake.

i don't know why, but this film didn't resonate well with me. i ended up giving up a bit after the half way mark. what was with the acting? am i missing something? the character interaction felt robotic and very "fast talky". guy pearce is usually very good, but here, i don't see it. he seems very forced and bi-polar, his emotions weren't flowing like they should. it was like watching a schoolboy trying to throwdown for the first time. hmmm.
maybe i'll watch this in a couple years time and appreciate it for what it is, but as of right now i'm not grabbed by this film.
spacey was real good though. but then again, when isn't he good.

loved it. i really wish i went into this not knowing about some sort of twist, that way i wouldn't have looked for it at every corner of the film. regardless this was an impressive film and scorsese can clearly deliver a compelling psychological thriller as opposed to his usual crime drama schtick. if this film has you intrigued in even the slightest, then do not even hesitate.
sidenote: dicaprio continues to impress me as an actor, and i can see why scorsese keeps coming back to him.
