Although I was somewhat lukewarm towards this film when i saw it, I still think about ideas I had while watching it from time to time almost a year later. Only now am I realizing how much of an impact it has had on me.
This film has the distinct honor of being the weirdest and most disturbing that I have ever seen. Of course, that is partially because I was probably only about 10 years old when i saw it, and I'm sure that films like Oldboy, Eraserhead or Audition are probably actually more disturbing, but I guess I'll have to rewatch it to find out . . .
Watchmen isn't even close to film-noir. Rorschach is something of a detective, in the tradition of hard-boiled fiction, but he owes more to other comic book super heroes (mainly Batman). Also, true films-noir are from a very specific time period between 1941 and 1958; everything after that is something different (neo-noir is a popular phrase used). And Watchmen isn't really even a neo-noir. Personally, I thought it was just a bad, overly stylized action movie (although the fact that I had read and loved the graphic novel before seeing it undoubtedly tainted my opinion).
Terrible? This is a well-shot and very funny modern monster movie with political satire as an undertone. It is definitely a fun movie to watch, but it was different enough from a Hollywood movie to be fresh. I would highly recommend it, as well as Joon-ho Bong's other films.
Not that it is the best movie ever, but I think that this film is somewhat underrated: it handles multiple characters (protagonists, villains, etc.) very well; it creates a wonderfully dark yet visually pleasing environment; it mixes action and comedy while also having a descent story; and most importantly, it is fun and entertaining. A great childhood favorite that made do with a fairly modest budget. Too bad the sequels were so terrible.
