It's a very well made movie about the family- and work struggles of a very successful person. Well directed, well shot, well acted.
But after seeing the movie I still don't know much about Bernstein though. His merits and imprint on music.
I feel I need to watch a documentary about him to fill in the gaps.
Possibly this is the biopic that should have come AFTER the documentary, like we often see how a successful documentary often gets a dramatized re-telling of the subject matter a few years after.
Very good, but I feel the ending was a bit abrupt and there were some character archs left unfinished (Frédérick). Almost like they were looking at the watch, "Oh shit, we're at 3 hours, finish the movie!"
What a beautiful, funny, but also sad movie to some degree. Think I had a smile on my face throughout most of it. And I didn't mind the bloopers at the end. It's nice to finish of the emotional experience the movie brings by having a laugh, either by yourself, or with whoever you shared it with. (But I also understand Sellers himself was not a fan of the outtakes.)
While watching this I couldn't help thinking this could be really amazing if adapted to live action by either Gilliam or Villeneuve. And soundtrack by Göransson, Trent/Atticus or (yeah I know they've split up) Daft Punk.
I liked the first part and the ending, so if the middle part hadn't been so long i would have liked it even more. Could cut down the middle part with at least 4- 5 minutes.
