I watched this without any audio and found it hysterical. Considering it's one of his Educational Pictures, I couldn't decide if I found it so funny because there was no sound or it really was funny. Given the previous comment, I'm going with because it's actually funny. The baseball game is quite hysterical.
I'm not a Kubrick fan but whenever I mention to Kubrick lovers that I loved this film, they smirk. I honestly do not understand; this film did much more for me than 2001. I was completely absorbed and astonished by the manipulation of time and the noticeable but subtle shift in Barry's character. And the cinematography. Just stunning.
What I love about Struges' films, this one in particular at least, is his ability to examine the components that make up the simple plot to make it more of a {funny} critique of the impact of money. While you do know what's going to happen, that's not the point Struges is making. It's the impact of money and how it influences the treatment you receive and vice versa; all in Struges' fantastic dialogue, of course.
I disagree with most of these comments; it was the adults I wanted to smack upside the head.They were so self-absorbed that it seemed they didn't realize what kind of pressure they were putting on Phillipe. I had nothing but compassion for him through out the film, especially in that scene where they were on the steps interrogating him.
Overall I really liked this movie (The Third Man still being my favorite) but I am going to have to have to watch more of Reed's films.
I saw this before La Strada and I still prefer this to La Strada. Giulietta Masina beautifully and charmingly plays a close female version of Charlie Chaplin's tramp. I must admit that it was Giulietta that won me over. She was a fantastic actress and by the end of the movie I wanted to cradle Cabiria in my arms. I don't think there has ever been another character that I've felt that much care and concern for.
