Wow, I am surprised that so many people like this movie... It was well made, but not a true Hitchcock - it is too close of adaptation of the book, which is engrossing, a fun read, but... I find the dumb female protagonist really annoying, as well as the patronizing Max de Winter. I guess, at this point method acting hadn't made it to the US yet... Still, nowhere as good as Rear Window, Psycho, et al...
GAHAHAh! This movie freaked the heck out of me! That is, I had to stop watching and finish watching it in daylight... And I don't get easily freaked out. That being said - a brilliant film!
This movie is pathetic. So for some reason they think they need to bring in two white people because Wesley Snipes was not enough? Wesley Snipes IS Blade. Ryan Reynolds' character is risible and Jessica Biel's is a walking iPod ad. Pathetic.
Well, George Bailey, I'm afraid that this movie has a harder time transcending cultural boundaries... I find that a lot of Eastern Europeans love this movie and most Americans don't and I think that's because this movie is so grounded in its historical context - one really needs to know stuff about the Stalinist purges to understand what happens in this movie and especially all the back story that is talked about, as well as the cultural nuances and the ambivalence of the many characters: e.g. the great Soviet leader who permits his wife's many relatives to live in a sheltered bubble of pre-revolution nostalgia - they live in Chekhov's world, and if caught they would be sent to Siberia or even executed in the blink of an eye as enemies of the people, enemies of the revolution, etc.
This movie is unbelievable. It is powerful in way that Hollywood hasn't managed to produce in a very long time. I cried for hours after I watched this film and I stopped crying at movie many years ago. It is also stylistically amazing - I grew up in the Soviet Union - it is just so truthful visually.
This movie is utterly overrated. Orson Wells may have been a wunderkind, but, man, even Battleship Potemkin aged better. And the self-indulgence - gaaaah. And the bludgeoning of the audience with "rooooooosebud". Not worth the hours I spent watching this movie over and over in film classes.
Another one of those really overrated movies. It needs to be an hour shorter and then it would be great, tight, well-paced. As is, it is unjustifiably self-indulgent. Someone should have told the filmmakers to stop... like say, a good editor.
Seriously, if this movie was about a straight couple nobody would have batted an eyelash. It's boring. The story is LAME, it's slow. There isn't enough conflict to support two hours of very little happening. Negligible character development. Can someone make a gay love story that is actually a GOOD movie and tells a GOOD story?
Totally agree with FoiNaCruz. Not to mention how sexist it is. And the whole, I had sex with you while you were sleeping... Hey, Roman Polansky, have you heard of conjugal rape? Oh but wait, he still has to be extradited for being a perverted git and rapist... so little surprise there. I cannot believe something this lame is part of the cinematic cannon. Rosemary is just about the dumbest film protagonist I can think of, created by one helluva sexist jackass.
