I'd like to compare the final scene where Kate Winslet is sobbing on the boat, reaching out for Pauline to a similar scene in Titanic several years later.
This is amongst the best adaptations of Lovecraft. Others that were also good were of course, the Re-Animator series of films and From Beyond. This has a quality to it that is different from these, making it a more entertaining film to the masses.
As made overtly clear by the films title, Melancholia seems to be made with the intention of evoking melancholy feelings in the viewer. People often watch sad movies, they cry a little, get over it ten minutes later and then feel great. These films provide a sort of contrast for the viewer. This is not one of those films. This film has you nervous the whole time and is just flat out depressing without hope for convalescing.
I liked the ending. I didn't think it was a silly twist at all. I'm not one for thrillers usually, but I'm not sure I would call this a thriller in the end. Too supernatural.

The characters are good and the children actors are spectacular. The film overall was not great.
