So not only is this the first MGM film to feature Leo the Lion as the logo, but he also gets to play a supporting role.

It's perfectly right in so many ways that this should be the film Norma Desmond watches in Sunset Boulevard, although Norma (Gloria Swanson) would have been perfect not for the role of Kelly (Gloria Swanson), but that of Queen Regina, strolling round her palace naked except for the cats, imprisoning her lover and whipping her love rival.

Epic. Especially the triptych ending. Can't wait for the sequel.

So was the play really 5 hours?

Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet (1996) which contains every word runs to four hours.

And the 1938/9 Broadway season's first uncut Hamlet, ran for four and a half hours.

More here.

For anyone who is wondering where this list is from, it is the They Shoot Pictures, Don't They? Neo Noir list.

The only reasons I can think of why Casablanca shouldn't be counted as a film noir is that it was too popular, and has a happy ending (and there are films on this list that end well).

How come Casablanca isn't on this list?
