Occasionally eerie---and of course beautiful, as most of K. Kurosawa's films are, but I found it mostly meandering and without presence. Intensifying its characters' obsessions might have helped, but I'm not sure. Just didn't click for me.
It is a bit long, and its script isn't so strong, but I think that Russel's hyper-committed performance and Carpenter's beautiful, assured command of the camera make it a compelling watch.
The bugles scene is gold! All in all, a rough, dirty, restless film about naive, dishonest youthfulness that's compelling despite its mostly unlikable lead. It is flawed in several facets, but I think its tattered components work in tandem with the life its representing. Good stuff.
Surprising! Decent little crime caper film, wherein Imamura's obsessions with the American occupation, effects of the second world war, violence, and sexual tension all emerge organically over the simple tunneling for buried goods yarn. Nicely photographed in scope; reminiscent of The Ladykillers.
Similar to other late Imamura films with its focus on community, sexual obsession/dysfunction, magic realism, sobering views of the world outside of its setting, and an emphasis on color (particularly red), but I found it too distancing and its characters pretty thin---which is a shame given its formal beauty. I couldn't get into it, or find a reason to care, and this is coming from someone who's a big fan of Imamura's post documentary work.
Damn. I was digging this until it fell into the cliched murder and trial rhythms. Worth seeing for Garbo, maybe, who is on a different level than the rest of the performers. It's a very lived in, natural performance that defies the melodramatic trappings.
Dramatic, sentimental, and visual bombast. Woo not only gives us visually coherent, beautiful action sequences at the height of his directorial talent, but blends in critique and a myriad of cultural iconography with powerful results. His best work, and a tough film to respond to.
A lot of posturing above the waist, a lot of 'touching' music, and two of those artistic tortured types in a classic bohemian l'amour fou, but it comes together. Rather touching.
There's something to be said for a film that sincerely and convincingly renders the passions of two handicapped social outcasts. That said, I was a bit put off by its contrived final act and the blanket discrimination and misunderstanding from the supporting players.
