Easily the most ridiculous fun of the summer. It's as if Luc Besson saw The Tree of Life and said, "I *must* remake this as a superhero film." The most energy on display from the director in at least two decades. If only more studio movies were like this we'd be in a much better place. Sigh.
A wonderfully strange, touching look at false intimacy and, possibly, our future. Phoenix is great and it's quite amazing how Jonze sells both the world and and the relationship at the center. The Mara flashbacks are great, too.
This was a very mediocre movie. Snyder has some neat visual touches placed throughout, but the entire last half is a mindless headache -- think of the worst parts of The Avengers without any of the fun camaraderie. Henry Cavill is very strong, as is most of the rest of the cast, but the script is poor. It's mostly exposition and the most banal, forced kind. I didn't necessarily mind the flashback structure, but it undercuts some momentum. There are a few bad-ass moments...and that's about it.

I found it to be a rollicking space procedural that favors entertainment over emotion. Here's my full review: http://thefilmstage.com/reviews/review-the-martian/Movie comment on Los Angeles Plays Itself
