@swoon. The "favorites" and "dislikes" data is used to calculate your neighbors and your recommendations, so there is already a direct benefit of that data other than personal satisfaction.

I think some people are missing one of the points of personal lists, which is to make it easier for Piet and Erik to make new official lists. Having a bunch of personal lists (even with a lot of useless "best of 2010" ones) will make it easier to pick the cream of the crop and make them official with the click of a button instead of having to build them from scratch. In other words, a thousand useless personal "best of 2010" lists is the price we pay for more, new and (hopefully) exciting official lists.

I know I'm looking forward to more award lists from different countries along with some more sub-genre lists.

"Devalue the site"? Are you kidding? Isnt checking every film youve seen what the site is about? I dont care if certain people consider a film I like/have seen not worthy etc. I watch whatever interests me. If theres people who only want to watch critically acclaimed films, thats cool. I don't judge cinema in that way. Theres tons of films that Ive enjoyed that arent even listed on ICM yet. Watching films for me isnt about creating walls, its about breaking them down.

Eh, if it's a one-time fee I'd consider paying it for the added functionality, but there's no way I'd be paying a recurring subscription fee to keep it.

I am exited about being able to add a lot of lists which might be too specific for the likes of everybody, but that mean a lot to me. For instance I am working on many different western lists, and it would be so much easier to check my progression on ICM.

@ LCWymer but really that's only a problem if for whatever reason you want to have a favorites list that includes you actual favorite movies - the distinction being is it a list of your favorite movies or a list of your favorite movies that also included on the surveyed lists.

that distinction is important because outside of personal satisfaction, there is no benefit to the site or its users to included such data as it doesn't have an idea around groups or a greater community vision (that has been shared at least) that would make knowing whose favorite movies falls outside of the tens of thousands of films it tracks currently and what for purpose? wouldn't this time be better served adding more vetted lists to the site or robust community features? the concept of someone keeping an up to date dislike list is so baffling to me i can't even start to process that mindset.

@moviedearest

there is no point to having users maintain their own lists without a greater community push, and that push would need to come before all these other list and movie features. i'm sure everyone has already realized that there will be 1,000 best movies of 2010 done by 1,000 different users and so on, it would be better if the community was able to vote for topics and as a group make lists such as the reddit list that is on the site. it would promote the community and the site much more than storm of lists that is soon to come.

If my memory serves me correctly, Erik and/or Piet have said that there will be a new option that will allow you to "hide" movies that are not on any official iCM top list.

I believe the MAIN reason the function to add movies is being created is so that users can make their own lists.

From the previous blog post "iCM 2.0 preview: checking any movie":

"Furthermore, this is an essential feature to allow you guys to create personal top lists. We have very limited time and there have been dozens and dozens of top lists suggested that we would love to add to the website, but for which we cannot find the time. Allowing users to create personal lists only makes sense when new movies can be added, as one otherwise ends up with the same lists over and over again."

I agrre with those who are opposed to the idea of including all movies. It's the lists that are the most interesting part of this site.

And paid accounts? I'm a fan of the site but not enough to pay. I hope the features we have today will remain free because I'd hate to leave the site after checking all those movies manually (I'm not an imdb user).

@Bal3x I get that it will not change the purpose of the site, but it is a weird change to the direction of effort. The attempt to be all things to all people doesn't seem to align with the purpose of the site as it is today and the effort and time to be this "capture every movie" watched" side project seems wasted and pointless when a spreadsheet, imdb or a set of green felt stickers placed on the spine of the dvds you've watched (i suppose there is a digital version of the green sticker through boxee or plex) would do. What is the purpose of socializing all films watched and how does that align with the strategy of the site?

I don't really like the idea of including all movies ever. For one I couldn't possibly remember all the movies I've ever seen and secondly it takes some of the value out of the site when you can rack up huge numbers of seen movies that aren't on the lists. I like the lists being a constant to base your progress on.

There's no way I'm paying for this, but it's cool, I guess.

How about everyone complaining about the possibility to add movies read the comments of the iCM guys first.

Wouldn't adding users adding movies defeat the purpose of the site, which as I understand it, is to check movies against predefined lists? If you want to keep track of how many movies you've seen total there are better local ways of doing so - there is no reason to socialize such lists.
