The First appearance of the prize is for the XLII edition of the Ariel Awards. Since the prize is given to the director, the XLII and the XVLVII winners, O Primeiro Dia (Brazil) and Whisky (Uruguay), had two awards, one for each director. In the 53rd edition, there was a tie between José Martí: El ojo del canario (Cuba) and También la lluvia (España). In the 59th edition, there was another tie between El ciudadano ilustre (Argentina) and The Second Mother (Brazil).
