Why were they using floppy disks in 2018? Did someone in production briefly forget this isn't actually set during the Cold War, despite how it's dressed up?
I like to go into movies blind so this one was really shocking to me. Quite harsh which I don't mind, it was just not what I was expecting given Lawrence's history of milktoast movies. It would seem that this departure from the norm has jarred fans and they are not accepting.
If you can get past that, then there is much to enjoy here. Twists, deceit, and quick thinking are the game and it's well played by the Red Sparrow. I look forward to more and I fully expect a sequel given how much time they put into the back story.
Atrocious writing. Poorly developed characters. Numerous plot holes and illogical motivations. Terrible accents. Ridiculous sexual scenes. Absurd red-scare portrayal of Russian society. The twist is interesting but foreseeable and not worthy of going through 2 hours of watching this hot mess.
2/10
Red Sparrow could have been a Black Widow movie, or an "Atomic Blonde"-type vehicle for Jennifer Lawrence, but it's all a bit too straightforward for that. On the longish side, the post-Cold War Cold War thriller about a broken ballerina who becomes trained as a seductress-spy might well have benefited from a less linear structure, and certainly avoided scenes where the nevertheless solid and watchable - if expressionless - J-Law is forced to tell people the back story we all saw. Once the double-dealing starts and it's less obvious who she's working for, the movie gets more interesting, and I think comes to a satisfying conclusion. I call it straightforward, but it's also a straight take, the brutal violence never over the top, and humor almost absent. It's only very rarely a FUN flick (Mary-Louise Parker's character is about it), the sexual violence makes sure of that without necessarily making you feel it viscerally. It's a tale told adequately, but rarely stylishly. I liked it for what it was and several of its characters (the women mostly).
6/10
Begins so promising and continues half the movie and some more ... but difficult to finish well. Good acting and exciting straight through, but I doubt I will see it again.
Well acted and intruiging but doesn't quite work. First half is strong but motivations and actions are very muddled. It was ok, but this very grimm movie isn't one for repeat viewing.
I'm willing to give a lot more credit to Red Sparrow than most people are. Lawrence is excellent as always, but that's nothing surprising. What's surprising is that this movie got made!
Lots and lots of sex, violence, and torture, often incredibly over the top. But it works for the story, that is also over the top.
The movie is imperfectly excellent. You go with the flow until the end, when you begin to question plot holes and character decisions, but it doesn't detract from the overall experience.
Compared to the immense disappointment that was A Wrinkle in Time, for which I also had high expectations, Red Sparrow mostly delivered.

Summary: Murica is a great country full of decent but also smart peoples. Russias are communist and evil and also stupid and they torture people. This movie is sucks big time. Please don't let Jennifer Lawrance make Russian accent again.
